We have well over 1,000 books, and about six wide floor to ceiling bookshelves. The books are arranged by genre. They’re also meant to be arranged alphabetically, but I recently had to rearrange everything and so they’re now just arranged by genre.

So the sections of our books are basically (not according to any Dewey Decimal System)

1. Tarot/oracle decks 2. Books on druidry and witchcraft and paganism 3. Folklore, mythology and fairy tales 4. Poetry 5. Plays 6. Literature 7. Science fiction / fantasy 8. Young adult 9. Comics 10. Art books 11. Photography books 11. ‘Books I haven’t read yet and there’s so many they need their own shelf or maybe several shelves OH GOD OH GOD WHEN WILL I GET TO THEM ALL WHY DOES IT KEEP GROWING’ 12. Scriptwriting 13. Writing 14. Media studies: Cinema 15. Media studies: Television 16. Media studies: Health representations (including all stuff about how idiotic antis are) 17. Media studies: Everything else (anime/video games etc.) 18. Trauma psychology 19. Dissociative psychology 20. All other psychology 21. Natural history (in order of birds, mammals, animal psychology, animal identification books, and random animal shit I can’t fit anywhere else) 22. Native gardening / gardening with Australian plants 23. History (including queer history and Victorian sex practices, yes, really) 24. Autobiographies and biographies 25. All the stuff I can’t fit anywhere else but doesn’t deserve its own category (like dictionaries and atlases)

I’m probably missing something, but there we go.

tbh I’m more amused than bothered because like

ur... ur gonna tell me.... to reread the Children of Húrin? Do you know how many times I’ve read that book? Do you know I’ve read it in two languages??? Do you know I have like half the chapter with Finduilas in it memorized because I’ve read it so many times???????

I’d still be leaving after 3 hours. I’m too disabled to manage anything more.

I guess I’d just not be able to be in a lot of dungeons & dragons groups? I’m lucky my team are really permissive/flexible with me.

1/2 (I've been trying to reply to your post about Maeglin fic but tumblr isn't letting me so) YOU KNOW I was thinking of that exact piece of art when I read that line of yours! That talking sword (whether literally or figuratively) and the strange lingering connection to his father that it embodies has always fascinated me. Also so much yes to Maeglin's ambivalent relationship to great heights.

(cont) I tend to be in the camp of "Doom ™ is just a construct and at best a self-fulfilling prophecy and not some magic/destiny thing" but I love the ambiguity around it, too, and it's definitely not a fiction to Maeglin. I think he's also someone who generally tends to overthink stuff, so that's not helping either. 

 His whole double-guessing and triple-guessing himself and everything around him while still trying to keep up a certain facade of, well, what actually I'm not sure he even quite knows himself - aaah, I live for that. (I'm sorry if this isn't very coherent - sleep-deprived me is tired)

and YEAH I’m so glad that was in your brain too, because it was 100% what I was thinking of while writing! and yes, the relationship between Maeglin and Eol, and how that relationship continues to affect Maeglin after his death, and the way that the sword is part of the way Maeglin can’t fully shake off that connection no matter how much he wants to (and I think he does want to, I think Maeglin wants to think of himself as solely his mother’s son)...

and yeah, whether or not the Doom is real or not, Maeglin’s absolute belief in it is very heavy and very present all the time, and particularly in this verse where he really feels like there’s no escape, no way out and no way things will ever get any better, it’s just like this forever because of course it is, he slipped out of his fate once but eventually...

Maeglin does a lot of going in circles in his head. he’s smart enough to get himself in trouble like that. and doesn’t have a lot of belief/faith in the good intentions of people around him, either - his worldview, particularly at this point and in that ‘verse, is shaded pretty black. 

of course, he thinks, that’s fair - he doesn’t expect anything more. but it still aches, and he’s scared, even though he wants so badly not to be - he should be brave. 

brave like his mother, who never should have died in his place.

...I'm so confused now that I've never heard about the "genre" category before. I know the distinction that is made between "popular lit" and "high lit" (which is utter bullshit imho, especially when adding value judgments as you mention) but I've never heard it called genre and literary fiction. I'm sorry this is what I get stuck on but. Does literary fiction simply not have a genre? If it's "realistic" wouldn't it then be in the "realistic genre"? why be so confusing

This is one of those things that is really peculiar, because there’s crossover between “high art/popular art” and the related but different dichotomy between “literary fiction/genre fiction”, where the two categories are aligned, respectively. (i.e. high art = literary fiction, popular art = genre fiction.) So they can serve as the same thing, basically, just different language - and with the implication to boot that there’s “literary fiction” and then “everything else” (which handily lumps a whole bunch of disparate types of fiction into one basket marked ‘less important’).

The thing about literary fiction is precisely that it’s a nebulous category that is nonetheless treated like a genre, and that genre is sometimes defined (loosely) as “(often) contemporary setting (it can be historical depending on the historical period and the style of writing), realistic/roughly realistic milieu” but is more often defined against the categories it isn’t (fantasy, “women’s fiction”, mystery, etc). 

People do sometimes use “literary fiction” and “realistic fiction” interchangeably, but “literary fiction” is sometimes a way of parsing out from fiction that may be realistic but not “literary” (i.e. “women’s fiction”). It also lets the category include things like what I mentioned with Borges or Murakami - where they may not necessarily be “realistic” but are still considered “literary.” 

In general, it gets treated like the Supreme Court definition of obscenity: people know it when they see it (or they like to think they do).

And yeah, part of the reason I think this divide is so bullshit is because the very category of literary fiction, as with other genres and possibly more than other genres, is so nebulous and vague as to be functionally unusable. There’s no real “meaning” beyond the value judgment of it.

I just read and then re-read your latest Maeglin story on here, and- asdfghjkl I am so dead. How dare you. How dare you. This hurts so good and now I want to grab Maeglin and bury him in a mountain of fluffy blankets and affection even more desperately than usual. Stubborn, messed-up, tragic disaster boy. HEY SAME. I mean, he’s like. even more of a mess in this AU than in canon, in some ways, and 90% of the people he knows are pissed at him (understandably) and yet for some reason he doesn’t really get keeping him alive?? which, cut that out, please, but also okay maybe he doesn’t deserve the dignity of noble self-sacrifice

and this on top of all the existing post-Morgoth trauma he’s been effectively ignoring all this time that’s gonna...end up coming back to bite him. it’s not great. 

yeah, I think gonna keep...casually continuing this one, probably, because if I pretend like I’m not making it a thing maybe I can make it a thing? or something?

benefit of the doubt that that’s what’s going on, but...yeesh, not well phrased in that case. telling people to “calm down” when they’re upset tends to just come off as “you’re being irrational, stop complaining” in my experience, especially online

so yeah, would like to assume that was the intention, but...feel like the general point stands - I do feel like it’s fair to be frustrated with certain things regardless of (potential, still unknown) resolution. one of those things being something that’s not even based on what filmmakers are saying, but rather based on reception and what people have been saying about Loki in Infinity War for...a while.

(not upset with you or anything! to be clear! just...augh. this is kind of a Button thing for me because of Reasons)
