Zack was actually really close with both of his parents. The three shared a very loving, supportive relationship— and his parents both very much encouraged their son to follow his dreams wherever they took him. He was protective and doting toward his mother; not quite a momma’s boy per say but but he liked spending time with her, though he was a super active kid that was hard to get to sit still most of the time.
He greatly respected his father, who was a hard worker who pulled long hours in construction to support his family. He probably wasn’t quite as close with him, due to how much time the guy was gone at work, but they had a very positive relationship when they were around each other. He and his dad could be pretty mischievous together and it was usually up to his mom to reel them in.
After he left for Midgar, he wrote to them both very often and spoke to them on the phone... At first. The decline in his correspondence, however, was due to the fact his own beliefs in what he was doing were beginning to waver. His parents always trusted him to do the “right” thing, and there were times with Shinra where he wasn’t real sure if that’s what he was doing. He stuck with it, however, as his father instilled in him the lesson to ‘never give up.’ After all, if it’s not right now, then maybe he can make it right later once he becomes a First. Still, there were times he shied away from talking with his parents too much because he was somewhat ashamed and embarrassed... And didn’t want to disappoint them.
And then, of course eventually, the letters stopped coming all together.
