Marsha P Johnson, everybody!

For Pride Month, I did a black-and-white portrait of Our Lady and Savior Marsha P Johnson.

Black- and white charcoal on blue toned paper. Second image had some funky lighting issues. I'm still learning but I really like this medium. A little progress from last year's portrait.

I'm displaying this piece at an educational Pride event for kids at my local community center. Here's the accompanying blurb:

Marsha P Johnson

Marsha P Johnson was an LGBTQ+ rights activist and advocate. She herself was assigned male at birth, and before the widespread use of the term transgender, described herself as a gay person, a transvestite, and a drag queen. She chose the name Marsha P Johnson, and stated that the P stood for “Pay it no mind.” She was highly involved in the riot at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969. Frustrated with the transphobia and racism present in the gay rights movement, in 1970 Johnson co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with fellow activist Sylvia Rivera. Because of her tireless activism, Marsha P Johnson remains one of the most recognizable icons of LGBTQ+ history.
