Vancouver modern rock quintet Pigeon Park have showed no signs of slowing down since winning the 99.3 CFOX 'Seeds' Competition in 2013. The guys recently wrapped up a cross-Canada tour, and now they're about to embark on another one. Lead singe Nick Weber chatted with us about being on the road, learning from some big names in music and what the coming year may bring for their fans.
You guys released your third EP Stripes last year, which was recorded with legendary producer Garth Richardson. What was it like working with Garth?
Working with Garth was a great experience for us. We really learned a lot from him being in the studio together. He helped us refine our writing process and brought a bigger sound to the finished product. He's also hilarious!
How did putting that EP together differ from the band's previous works?
Putting together stripes was a long process for us. We went through a lot of different songs before we landed on the songs we used. It was an incredible studio as well, which is something we weren't necessarily used to. We were going from recoding in our producer's house to being at Fader Mountain with Garth was a big difference.
What do your fans think of the EP?
I think everyone was surprised at how polished the sound was on stripes. The songs went over really well with our audience. I think it was a bit of a departure from what we were used to but we made it work and some of those songs are still a staple of our live show.
This past summer, you released the infectiously catchy single "Sunlight Fading Away." What was the inspiration for that song? How have your fans responded to it?
"Sunlight Fading Away" was written by Logan Pacholok (guitar/vocals) and it touches on finding the inspiration to write music when it isn't always there. We love the song and have had some great feedback from our audiences!
Since Pigeon Park formed in 2008, you've opened for some pretty big names in rock, including Aerosmith, Slash and The Offspring. What's your biggest takeaway from watching another band perform?
Being able to watch big bands like that play is an honor in itself but you get to see and learn first hand how hard working everyone is. The professionalism of a lot of these bands is through the roof and we try to carry ourselves in the same way.
Your cross-Canada winter tour kicks off next week in London. What are you looking forward to most about this tour?
I think we are all just really excited to play! We have a bunch of shows on this tour and we've been itching to get on stage! Spencer (our new drummer) hasn't been out with us this long so it's also a good time for him to really get his hands dirty with us. Also playing N64 in the hotel is always exciting!
What does 2017 have in store for Pigeon Park?
We are currently writing a ton to put together an album in 2017. We can't wait to get back in the studio and see what we can come up with. In short, songs, shows, and everything in between!
