Summer, 1987.
Ziggy Berman is having the worst year of her life. Her father abandoned the family for another woman, their mother started drinking, and she can't stop fighting with her older sister, Cindy. Now they've all moved across the country to live with a peculiar grandmother she hardly remembers.
Known as the murder capital of the world, Shadyside, California, doesn't have much to offer aside from a beach boardwalk and it's there that all three Berman women have an encounter that changes their lives. At a video store owned by handsome bachelor Solomon Goode, their mother gets a job, and soon enough a date as well. And at the local comic book store, Cindy meets Alice, a self-proclaimed vampire hunter, who is investigating the disappearance of her best friend Tommy Slater the year before.
Left to her own devices Ziggy meets Nick, a mysterious boy she spots on the boardwalk, and who has noticed her, too. He's the leader of a biker gang, whose hideout is the remnants of an old hotel that collapsed during an earthquake. They challenge her with several tests of courage and soon offer her initiation into the gang, and Ziggy gladly accepts, for once feeling like she belongs.
And then Ziggy begins to undergo a change; her eyes are sensitive to sunlight, the smell of food revolts her, and more unsettling, she develops a craving for blood...
