Unscheduled Movement
While waiting for my next scheduled train, I was surprised by another unscheduled move, this time a couple of GP38-2s rolling westward through town. I was set up at the east end of town for my long telephoto re-shoot with a prominent church steeple when I had to react and bag this light engine move.

Outbound: Train 503
This was an image I’ve been meaning to re-shoot ever since the middle of January—I’d shot weekday train 107 in this location, but the day was quite dreary. Yesterday the sun was out, but there was an inordinate amount of rail enthusiasts in the frame.
This is train 503 as it moves eastward on Eleventh Street. That steeple belongs to the church of St. Paul Lutheran which is located over on Ninth Street.

A Day in Michigan City (1 of 7)
A Series of posts focusing on the Chicago, South Shore, and South Bend Railroad, now more commonly referred to simply as the South Shore. The passenger product has been taken over by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.
While waiting for an eastbound passenger train, I was surprised by this westbound set of engines running light in the other direction. This pair of SD38-2s were once owned by Reserve Mining. We’re on the west side of town, the first three images taken along Eleventh Street, while the last is on Tenth Street.

Inbound: Train 506
My penultimate train for the day was number 506 inbound. You might be able to tell that I was drawn to the roller coaster area found on East Eleventh Street: this is one stretch that will really see some change when the line gets rebuilt over the next couple of years.

Inbound: Train 606
The first train of the day that I was ready for: 606 rolling through the little roller-coaster section of East Eleventh Street in Michigan City. Five images by Richard Koenig; taken February 26th 2022.

My final train of the day was this one seen negotiating the “S” curve between Tenth and Eleventh Streets on the west side of Michigan City. This is another area that will change greatly with the impending rebuild of the line: this wonderful little curvy patch will be flattened out and the diamond with the former Michigan Central/Monon will be moved to the south a bit.
The Chicago, South Shore & South Bend has been called “the last interurban” and this odd little bit of curvy track truly provides a direct connection to that history. Too bad it will be going way, but I can understand why.

Still with some time to kill waiting for an eastbound, I ran down to check out the former Michigan Central passenger station. There I ran across this South Shore job working the MC main line. (It moved east after an Amtrak job came ripping through—which I was not in position to photograph.) The elegant swing bridge over Trail Creek was built in 1905.

I posted one shot from this sequence a few days ago: off-peak train number 107 rolls down Eleventh Street, on the east side of town. That steeple belongs to the church of St. Paul Lutheran which is located over on Ninth Street. I added a going-away shot here, but I need to look up if “Chief” is a legitimate location along the line.
