I hated seeing him hurt like that and I knew he was scared, but I was just glad to have him back.
My thoughts on Ep Prompto. Spoilers. Duh.
I want to talk specifically about his sense of Self.
We know Prompto for sure is a clone. One of millions. The fact that he realizes he has been party to killing copies of himself over and over and over again has to have some pretty devastating effects. Trying to absorb the idea that Verstael cloned his own genome and created these creatures has to be a soul crushing experience to have to face.
Not to even mention the fact that he had to kill his own creator. Then to have Ardyn mock him?
The thoughts that were likely going through that mans head had to have been absolutely terrifying and hopeless. Lesser men would have put the gun to their head and pulled the trigger. He killed the man who created him, called him a failure and then proceeded to try and ‘fix’ Prompto by trying to infect him. He shoots his own creator.
Imagine for a moment what that must feel like. Having your entire existence come crashing down on you. Everything you thought you were, everything you thought you could become just being torn apart in that single defining moment.
You’re suddenly not human anymore. You never had any parents at all and a dozen faces that are identical to you are staring back at you, being dissolved one by one. Trying to absorb what just happened and then suddenly, Aranea.
She makes Prompto get up and keep going. She could have left him and she did threaten to. But again, she kept him going, despite all those threats.
The camp scene is one that really got me. The part where he starts trying to scratch at his own bar code to remove it. It really made my heart ache because I’ve been there myself (for different reasons of course. I’m not a clone...or am i?)
Then the option to burn the bar code or give up comes up. I’ve played it twice and did both options. The first one, I did have him try to burn it off only to have Aranea say “You didn’t think that would work, did you?” and then use a potion on it. The second option was pretty much the same, he just sets the wood down and looks miserable.
Branded for life. Those words had to have been a bitter and painful pill to swallow for Prompto. He’s been through his own literal hell and there he is, at a camp in enemy territory alone and wondering just what he’s going to do.
He’s probably thinking about how he can’t ever go back to the guys (and he even says that to an irritated Aranea) and is probably trying to think how he’s going to survive on his own in Niffelheim. We know he -can- take care of himself, he obviously did growing up. But it’s that impending loneliness is what makes survival seem impossible.
I think if anything were to kill Prompto, it’d be the loneliness. The idea of Noctis hating him for being a Niff ... or worse, hating and wanting to kill him for being a clone of a man who helped to single handedly destroy Insomnia. A man who sent magitek soldiers who were basically Prompto in Light deflecting suits to kill everyone.
The psychological damage that boy faced is overwhelming. That’s something you just don’t get over- even after killing the ‘bad guy’ and going on your way. It’s clear by the way he acts when he says “couldn’t have done it without you gurrrrl” to Aranea.
I have to wonder what happened between him driving off and getting captured in Gralia. It’s something I found myself profoundly disappointed in when it just ended that way and then the end credits just show him in that contraption. I really wanted to see just how Prompto ended up in Ardyns hands.
Something else I have to wonder is, did Aranea send him knowing Ardyn waited for him? Did she know that he’d be sent there only to be captured and used as bait for Noctis? Some part of me thinks no, but at the same time how did Aranea know to be at the clone facility in the first place? It just seemed too convenient for me.
What are your guys’ thoughts?
I know exactly what comes next...
I got up close and personal with an MT who was standing outside of fighting range during my time with Cor. At least they have really nice smiles.
