Airport Wayfinding
For the most part of his career Walter Gropius relied on the supporting hands of trusted partners: being more of a creative communicator than a gifted draftsman, Gropius needed sparring partners to visualize his ideas. In Adolf Meyer, Maxwell Fry, Marcel Breuer and later the partners in The Architects Collaborative Gropius found just that and thus it’s no wonder that in his introductory essay to the present volume he addresses the issue of teamwork: “The Architects Collaborative 1945-1965”, published in 1966 by Niggli, a beautifully and comprehensively illustrated retrospective of 20 years of TAC. The volume documents the considerable output of the firm as well as the great variety of projects TAC completed in just two decades, among them office buildings like the PAN-AM tower in New York, the Gropiusstadt in Berlin, churches, embassies, hospitals, libraries, hotels etc. etc. An obvious focal point of TAC was the design of schools and universities that in many examples from all over the world appear in the book and represent a bridge between Gropius’ magnum opus in Dessau and his postwar work.
A beautiful, neatly designed classic and a long overdue addition to my library.

What a great honour being part of this new publication. Bi-Scriptual has been published by one of our favourite (and with great legacy) Swiss publishing house Niggli Verlag and is a book about multilingual practice in Graphic Design. Three of our fonts are being part of the publication: TBD Contact, TBD Contact Reverse and FTRT, as well as part of the environmental graphics we designed for Football Pro. The Birthdays Design
It was only after Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021) received the Pritzker Prize in 2006 that the German-speaking world really took note of his work, a circumstance that was also reflected by the basically non-existing German-language literature on the Brazilian master. An exception to this day is Annette Spiro’s monograph „Paulo Mendes da Rocha - Bauten und Projekte/Buildings and Projects“, published by Niggli in 2002. In it Spiro, architect herself and since 2007 professor at ETH Zurich, collects 37 of PMdR’s projects and provides an in-depth analysis of his design principles and the fundamentals of his architecture. Beginning with the basic components of architecture, i.e. site, shelter, cantilevers and pillars, Spiro elucidates Mendes da Rocha’s arrangement of these components and reasoning behind it. From this she then changes over to explaining the interrelationship between these components in the architect’s designs: PMdR’s architecture is characterized by a close relationship with ground and site, a particular light regime but also by the contrastive pairs horizontal vs. vertical planes and voids vs. filled spaces. After this introduction to Mendes da Rocha’s architectural principles the author presents a thorough catalogue of his works that ranges from Club Atlético Paulistano gymnasium to the University of São Paulo museums. With each project being discussed in illustrative texts and supplemented with drawings, plans and photographs the reader receives in-depth information on Mendes da Rocha’s built and unbuilt designs, visually stunning and highly readable. Thus, Annette Spiro’s monograph, irrespective of the fact that it is the only comprehensive publication on Mendes da Rocha also in German, still is a valuable publication that rivals many other and later released books.
