Welp, it's based on an old thought. In some fanfiction I've read, even though the fact that Dream is dead, positivity continues to exist for… no reason. So I wondered what the consequences would be if only negativity remained in the world, and my answer for now is: it leads to a very slow decline of the world (multiverse). Like, when you only feel negative emotions, after a while you despair for positivity. That's what keeps us alive after all. But you can't even hope to feel it again. So... Depression ? And at that point you can't get out of it, the weapons to fight it are gone. You can't show your brain that life is worth it, you can't be happy about what's happening to you, even the things you love. It can take years. But in the end, dying seems a good option. And if you don't suicide... It may be the case for many people around you.
Also, not everyone reacts the same way to negativity. Some go crazy, some kill others… I think it leads everyone to their breaking point no matter what they do when that moment comes.
It will probably take a few generations before the two main races are completely extinct, not to mention the fact that in the Dreamtale canon it seems that some can become dark beasts looking desperately for positivity.
Back to what I drew, Nightmare probably doesn't care about destroying the world in the end, but Merciless hasn't been through what he has. No one bullied him, no one hated him for who he was, he has no real reason to be mad at everyone. He's just doing what his father raised him to do. So the result may be not what he was looking for. Him too can't feel positivity now.
In the end, imprisoning Dream in stone was maybe the best option x'D
