Nightshade berries are ripening! 🍇🍇🍇🍇 Disclaimer: Do Not eat any fruit that you don't know is 100% safe! 🍇🍇🍇🍇 I pulled a couple that were completely ripe (fell off the stem when lightly pushed). They are dull black (I didn't eat the one that is purplish-green because that means it's unripe), pea-sized, and were growing together. It looks like ants have also discovered some of the berries, as well. (Like they did with my goji berries!) But there are still many almost-ripe berry clusters on this plant - the one growing in the dried-out pond. I tried to cut one open to get a view of the inside, but it just exploded with all the seeds in it. Did a quick lick test, and it wasn't bitter, so I tried it, lol. #yolo 🍅🍅🍅🍅 It tastes just like an over-ripe cherry tomato. Not too impressed with it, tbh? It was like what the fresh goji berries taste like - except goji is a little bitter. This nightshade berry also tasted a little acidic (not bitter or sour, acidic like a tomato), so needless to say, I probably won't eat them much if they're going to aggravate my stomach acid problems. I was thinking of making a jelly of them, with the goji berries, like it might be like tomato jelly? But again, acidity. So if I don't feel sick after this, they'll just be a daytime snack then. 🍒🍒🍒🍒 It's so hard to find accurate info about nightshade berries because of the historical discrepancies in correctly naming them and their variations, but I think I'm correct that this is #solanumamericanum or #solanumdouglasii both native to our area, either way it's definitely a #solanumnigrum . The edibility is debated because of the issues with naming, but many people agree that as long as the berries are fully ripe, there is less risk. So? Y'know, I wanted to try. 👅👅👅👅 #nightshadeberries #solanum #nightshade #plants #berries #solanaceae #blacknightshade #americannightshade #douglasnightshade 💦 ((Yes, I know I'm wild to be trying a new fruit while I'm still having a bad allergic reaction to a food, but if a literal food item being sold in stores will make me sick when it's supposed to be safe for consumption, I just gotta live my life to try new things. Also, fuck cashews.)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEc7GkUgWR6/?igshid=hndftw516m8h
