if there was anything that grell hated, ghosts would be near the top of the list.
they were a sign of laziness, in her opinion-- and perhaps also a grim reminder of how cut off from the rest of the world this place was. she had attempted to leave countless times since her arrival here, but it seemed that her power of teleportation was being blocked by something, making her incapable of leaving whatever plain of existence this city had settled itself in-- and the rest of her powers locked away, buried deep inside her body; hidden in a place she couldn’t reach.
it was troublesome, to say the least.
walking through district gamma at night, however, only served to remind her of this. there was clearly no way for any other shinigami to reach this place within normal means-- if the number of spirits haunting the streets were any indication. the only time a human soul became a ghost was if it was left uncollected, left to rot in it’s inner turmoil. it would eventually turn into a former shell of it’s human form, and most turned violent and vengeful if left alone long enough.
or became dinner for a wandering demon, whichever came first.
she knew that they were watching her as she walked down the now empty streets that she took to come out from the underground location in order to find somewhere reasonably quiet to rest each night on the surface.
[ can see... ]
[ see us... ]
[ can hear... us...? ]
they hung in the shadows, their quietly echoing voices barely reaching her ears as she ignored their presence. she had decided that she would find a way to remedy this monstrosity when she could, but for now she was just glad that she had taken the precaution to have the skulls on her glasses’ chain carved from howlite during her first few decades as a shinigami.
she wasn’t quite sure what had enticed her to do so, considering she had never been the superstitious type. perhaps the memory of thomas wallis’ cinematic records attacking william all those years ago had triggered it-- however now she was thankful for her foresight, especially when it came to walking through district gamma without her death scythe.
as they did each night, the ghostly afterimages closed in on her and she halted; they hissed and cried out faintly-- and grell felt only disdain for them. she was not sympathetic in nature when it came to humans, perhaps a callous after effect of her training. not that it mattered, really.
these were only things created from powerful emotions that arised during their deaths, after all.
as they came within arms reach though, they seemed to halt-- only to let out a scream again as she settled her gaze on them. they seemed to shiver, and as she took another step forward they scattered-- their voices fading off into the night.
she sighed quietly, running a gloved hand through her bangs to brush them out of her face-- her voice soft as she muttered to herself under her breath.
“good riddance, i say. maybe sebastian will do me the favor of eating you one of these days.”
“... then again william would probably kill me if he got wind that i let that happen, huh? aaah, damn. i hate doing overtime, but i guess i will have to sort this out eventually.”
starting forwards again, she noticed the tall figure of a stranger approaching from the direction she was headed. raising a gloved hand, she gave the other a friendly little wave-- and on a whim, decided to offer the other a bit of friendly advice as she got within their earshot.
oh, they were cute too. god bless.
“the ‘residents’ are a bit restless on this street tonight, might want to take a different route, love.”
