N2 Grammar (when, as soon as)

とたん vs かと思うと 

外に出たとたんに寒さが襲ってきた。 When I went outside, the cold hit me.

お姉ちゃんがさっき帰ってきたかと思ったら、もういない？！ Just when my sister got home, she’s already gone?!

Both grammar structures have a sense of something happening immediately after something else has occurred (直後、瞬間的).

とたん has a sense of speed--that is Y happens relatively fast after X has occurred.

かと思うと has a surprise/unexpected appeal, as in something that is beyond your expectations or extreme occurred. Just when A happens, F happens (though you might’ve been expecting B).

Happy Friday

Today is a relaxing study day (for the most part)~

I reviewed some TTMIK lessons from Level 1.  Most of the review was relistening to the podcast.  I flipped through a couple of the PDFs.  I will write them down in my notebook eventually.  ^^

As for Japanese, just a bit of listening practice.  I started watching anime after a long break.  Well, that is to say, more anime instead of just having one that I follow religiously.  ^^  

The one that I’m currently working on is Mob Psycho 100.  It’s fun, sweet, and just the right amount of humour for me.  Plus, it has great voice acting that clear and easy enough to pick up new words.

That’s the fun part of the studying.  （笑）

The intense listening is Nihongonomori (日本語の森).  The hardest thing in this world is having grammar explained to you in the language you’re learning.  Combining this with the textbooks I have, it’s an intense experience.  Little by little!

N2 grammar is...  

...a massive challenge for me. しょうがない。出来るよ！

The Sakura is done in Tokyo now. I downloaded all to audio from the N2 Nihongo no Mori playlist and am listening to that every day on the way to work.

Part 1 on the usages of ほど by nihongonomori.

This is all in Japanese, but it has some nice example sentences. Here are the main points:

1. ほど meaning approximation or roughly (same as くらい) 2. ほど as degree or extent

Noun + ほど い adjective + ほど な adjective + な +ほど Verb plain non-past + ほど

3. Noun + ほど meaning a certain kind of person or thing is better than…

4. ほどほど meaning “just right” or “no more or no less” or moderately
