Private Mastaff Mutanga served with courage and dedication as a soldier of the Rhodesian African Rifles, attached to Two (Independent) Company. During the final months of the conflict in Rhodesia, he took part in active operations under Operation Hurricane, an area marked by intense and dangerous engagements.
In January 1979, Private Mutanga was wounded in action during a contact near Karoi. Despite efforts to save his life, he later succumbed to his wounds after being casualty evacuated to Kariba, where he passed away on 25 January 1979.
Private Mutanga’s service stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by African soldiers who served with loyalty and resolve under extremely difficult circumstances. His loss was felt by his comrades, his family, and his community. He is remembered with respect for his bravery, duty, and the price he paid in the line of service.
