Lucille Clifton seems to be everywhere I look these days. A few weeks ago while skimming through my Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry and a title, 'Moonburn,' snagged my attention, and that was the first time I read a Lucille Clifton poem (or so I thought). And then the Sunday before the inauguration I was at a Chicago Writers Resist event where a poet shared a piece or hers... followed by a piece by Clifton. Then this past week while thumbing through another anthology I found a poem I had read and marked last year: 'note, passed to superman,' by (you guessed it) Lucille Clifton. And just now, as I sat down to read Nikky Finney's collection, 'Head Off & Split' with a cup of tea, I see that this book is dedicated to, yes, Lucille Clifton. Ya think the 'Verse is trying to tell me something? #currentlyreading #amreading #booklr #bookstagram #poem #poetry #poet #lucilleclifton #nikkyfinney

Although Baldwin may be better known for his essays in “The Fire Next Time” or “Notes of a Native Son”, he was also a skilled poet. Check out this essay on James Baldwin’s poetry by Nikky Finney!
