*quiet cry of frustration* Full disclosure: I don’t write romance. The only time I’ve ever done that is in a fanfiction on my main blog and that wasn’t even very detailed. Just an, “Oh, yeah, these two are married and these two over here are dating. Jsyk”

But I did try to do your prompt. In Delaying the Darkness, my current WIP, there’s a side character (the best friend of the main character) who tapped me on the shoulder early on in the writing process and went, “Just so you know, I am deeply and irreversibly in love with Omisha.”

Omisha. The very much asexual and grey-romantic main character…

This is a possible scene set shortly before the beginning of the actual book. (It’s not very long, but it’s a scene)

Nik sipped his coffee, loosening the collar of his uniform.

Omisha’s fingers tapped away on the keys, her eyes flitting between the screen and the handwritten notes on her desk.

Nik watched her work, taking a sip from her coffee with one hand without slowing down in the slightest. It was impressive.

The radio played quietly in the background, some CD that Omisha had picked up at a yard sale somewhere. The smooth tones of a saxophone were just loud enough to be heard, but not enough for it to be a distraction.

Nik sat back in his chair and listened to the steady hum of the refrigerators and the clicking of the keyboard.

Whenever Elais or the sheriff came in here, they couldn’t wait to leave. Both said it was eerie and too quiet. The sheriff said that he “didn’t want to be around that kind of silence until he was on a slab himself,” but Nik didn’t mind.

Omisha was there.

Her umber eyes flicked to him for just a second before going back to her work.

“You’re staring again.”

He shifted in his seat, glad that his dark skin made it harder to see him blush.

“Just lost in thought.”

She hummed and stopped typing, sitting back in her chair and facing him with her hands clasped in front of her.

“Want to talk about it?”

He did. But he also knew she probably wouldn’t appreciate it, so he kept it to himself.

“Nah, I’m fine. Just some weird calls at work.”

She nodded her head once and turned back to the desk.

To be honest, he was fine. Just being able to be friends with her? Being able to come by the office after his shift and drink coffee in silence and on weekends they’d have game nights with his roommate? Yeah, that was enough.

He swore he’d be content as long as he got to keep this.

     This is my new son Nikodemus. He can’t talk well due to a severe case of missing lower jaw, but that doesn’t stop him from trying.
