Nimbrethil, the small forest located west of the havens of Sirion, from which the wood that built Vingolot, the ship of Eärendil. I imagine it as a coastal forest with many small streams that run towards the mouths of Sirion

This also completes my forests of Beleriand board series!!!

I want to make a full world building post for this but I love to imagine Eärendil exploring these woods...

OC Headcanons!

i was tagged by @celeluwhenfics 😭 to generate headcanons of a character using this generator and this was for nimbrethil from daughter of the trees !!

i wouldn’t be so sure about that… and i don’t think she should be trusted with anything that moves on its own.

i mean, she does bully [make him feel bad] a kid for having the same name as éothain so…. that’s not so far off.

oh yeah it will only end up in her believing 1) the person criticising her is jealous af of how good she actually is, or 2) she is a useless, worthless, hopeless thing in Middle-earth. there is no in- between.

Luthien is often made into this sheltered princess who doesn't know much about the outside world(for understandable reasons, it fits with the fairytale trope, we're never really told much on her life before she met Beren anyway, etc) but the Girdle of Melian never existed until the early years of the First Age so I like to imagine that before the creation of the girdle she was a passionate explorer, wandering to the farthest corners of Beleriand, from the rivers of Ossiriand to the shores of Cirdan's Havens, from dark Nan Elmoth to the birch forests of Nimbrethil, to the piney woodland hills of Dorthonion and the misty lake of Mithrim. She only chooses to stay in Doriath after the Girdle has been raised out of love for her parents and other kindred, and even then she spends most of her time in the woods of Neldoreth rather than the halls of Menegroth, for it is in the wild that she feels the most free.

Well, back on my tree-related ramblings again. I suddenly feel nostalgic for Bridge to Terabithia. I loved the book and the film when I was in middle school. I’m thinking about Elwing and Eärendil playing make-believe games in Nimbrethil* or Nan Tathren** as children, building tree-houses and defending their imaginary realm***. It’s even better when tree-giants actually exist in Middle-earth so they encounter and befriend Ents****.

*There is sort of a Giving Tree scenario when older Eärendil needs the trees he has played with to sacrifice themselves for ships, but the trees are less compliant so he has to reciprocate, but that’s a whole other story on how Eärendil learns from the Falathrim to maintain ecological balance as shipbuilders.

**Voronwë asks to be their guardian to sit in the distance every time. He trusts the kids to take care of themselves yet just in case. Idril and Tuor know exactly why he needs to go there.

***The difference is they are both would-be rulers and have seen real battles, but I think of this game as escapism, where they create a safe space to deal with trauma in an imaginary world.

****An Entwife later watches over Elrond and Elros when they are with Maglor and Maedhros and after, while she is walking around mourning for the lost trees as Beleriand falls apart, but that’s a whole other story on Haruninya the Granny Ent. Elrond and Elros also have their own Terabithia, and they love visiting their haruninya, even though she takes an entire day to tell one tale. When Elrond grows older he becomes patient enough to learn some Entish from her.

Lesser known forests of Beleriand! The elm woods of Ossiriand the small birch wood Nimbrethil where the wood that wrought the ship Vingilot was found and the pine forests of Dorthonion! The reference to the elm woods actually comes from The Return of the King and Treebeard's poem!
