Let’s try to touch it up a little.” she said, now fiddling with Piper’s hair by herself since hiring a make up artist for this little interview was simply too expensive. Saving money where it’s possible was Nina’s motto.

Piper’s nose wrinkled in disapproval as Nina began fussing over her hair herself, instead of letting Piper try to fix it herself first. “I do have a huge forehead, though,” she countered, her voice not holding its usual bravado. This interview was making her more anxious than she could possibly convey to anyone, which was only made worse by the high school era insecurities this mini makeover was bringing up. Her hair was too red, her cheeks were too round, her chin was too prominent, her jaw was too masculine looking, and so on and so on. 

Frankly, she was starting to feel a little bit sick.

“Have you ever had anyone throw up on camera? Like, is there a protocol I should know about?”

That didn’t stop her flow, nor stem her confidence, this intrigue of hers, nor the abrupt start-up in conversation. Neither ever had. Camille was far too seasoned in her crafts to slip up at this stage of the game. She could mix to perfection, garnish, and present any drink told to her without even the need of her eyes by the point she was at----muscle memory being the blessing it were. So rather, her gaze remained on this woman she was serving, not moving once, but squinching a touch in demonstration of just how peaked her interest now was.

Piper normally didn’t take this bus route, and given the inconvenience it had caused her, she was thankful that she didn’t. Still, she knew she should be thankful that there was a way to get home at all at this point in the morning. The LA transit usually didn’t start running multiple buses on a route until a little later in the morning when the rush hour really started, so the fact that she wouldn’t have to wait long for the next one to show up was really a miracle. So, she should at least be thankful for that.

Although, she would have been more thankful if the Los Angeles metro had told her that her train was going to be under maintenance this morning in the first place, instead of making her walk all the way to the station, only to find out that that line wasn’t even running today. 

Sometimes, she really just wished she just had a car. But insurance was expensive and gas was as well, so, in the meantime, she was going to have to put up with the inconsistencies and inconvenience of public transit. 

It had been the same stop she’d used to get home on the nights Lou didn’t drop her off, but instead dismissed her after they reached KWLA and left her on her own. Although, it hadn’t even really occurred to her that the stop was directly in front of KWLA until she’d reached it. Those short walks in the lonely dark of newly dawning morning always made the trip feel much longer than it was, paired with the prickling of anxiety that left her exhausted by time the bus arrived, ultimately making her feel more like she’d run a half a dozen blocks instead of merely walking from the parking lot. 

Piper began to do the best she could to distract herself until the bus arrived, trying not to take much notice of the building behind her. She busied herself with trying to scrape off the dried who-knows-what off the sides of the soles of her shoes, trying not to think about how all the food looked about the same after a few hours caked on the rubber soles of a pair of sneakers. As soon as she’d deemed her shoes clean enough, the redhead glanced over her shoulder towards the door of the television station behind her before quickly hitching up the skirt of her uniform, grabbing hold of the waistband, and worked on wiggling off the pantyhose. It barely took more than a minute or so to pull them loose, finally wadding them up, and stuffing them into her backpack with a defiance that was reserved solely for her three dollar nude pantihose from Walgreens. She still looked ridiculous, like she’d just come from some kind of fucking sock hop with her gingham dress, but at least she didn’t feel like some kind of stuffed sausage anymore, even if her legs were a little chilly now...

Where on earth was that bus?
