“We are a lighthouse”; 60x40”, acrylic, ink, pencil, pen, canvas, paper collage and brass on panel; title from #nayyirahwaheed this piece is part of my #lanternseries 🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓 I pick titles that either fit with elements in the piece, or the feelings I have when looking or making; these pieces relate to water, as the original image that inspired these “positive lantern” paintings was sunlight refracting on water in a photograph by Caribbean artist Nadia Huggins; she is a stranger to me but she inspired this entire group with a single image...it’s connections like these that continue to push my work—little human moments that resound, both inside ourselves and out loud; as for the title, Nayyirah Waheed is one of my favorite contemporary poets, and I page through her book “Salt” often. Borrowing the words of others—poets, songwriters, philosophers, fiction writers, teachers—furthers that feeling of connection. Let us be lighthouses for each other, now and always 🌊🌊🌊 #ninatichava #ninatichavaart #largescaleart #newpainting #newfavorite #studiowall #studioview #santafestudio (at Santa Fe, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-SHxP9nGrK/?igshid=jhr8uwtp26cx
