Mary Oliver // Audre Lorde
are you?
no actually, i will not become harsh or jaded just because that is what the world expects of me. i am begging for soft writing actually. give me writing that feels like turning the tender side of your heart to the sun, like unlocking the latch on your bedroom window after a heavy bout of rain, like dropping your bags to the floor after a long trip and feeling the weight on your shoulders finally ease.
like we’re all pomegranate seeds tumbling to the floor of a jar. the pith is all that separates us and it’s soft enough to crumble beneath the pressure of a fingernail.
i do hope we will be able to preserve some of our softness no matter how harsh the world becomes. i know it’s not necessarily practical, but i do think it’s important. what lasts us through and beyond our lives, if not art? what connects us, if not our humanity?
anyways this all got me thinking, and i decided to start a tiny literary magazine called lightletter.
i’d love to read your writing, whether that’s poetry or creative writing or nonfiction. if you’re a writer/artist/know someone who is, please consider sending something in!!! the world needs to hear your voice now more than ever, and i hope that together we can create a safe little community for creatives 💗
(especially if you’ve never submitted anywhere before! what better time than now?)
if you’re interested, please submit here: https://forms.gle/fgmYfYQj854UDh3J6 (and if you submit before april 31st, you could make it into the first issue!!!!!)
Maybe the desire to make something beautiful is the piece of God that is inside each of us.
-Mary Oliver
Be still, my soul, and steadfast. Earth and heaven both are still watching though time is draining from the clock and your walk, that was confident and quick, has become slow. So, be slow if you must, but let the heart still play its true part. Love still as once you loved, deeply and without patience. Let God and the world know you are grateful. That the gift has been given.
Mary Oliver, “The Gift”
"The desire to be loved is the last illusion. Give it up and you will be free."
— Margaret Atwood
“Of course I wake up finally thinking, how wonderful to be who I am, made out of earth and water, my own thoughts, my own fingerprints— all that glorious, temporary stuff.”
Mary Oliver, From "Blue horses"
idk about you guys, but sometimes i am simply overwhelmed with love for humanity and even with all the terrible things going on in the world i see something that makes me gasp and think “we are good. there is goodness in everyone. i am so glad i exist.” and i really hope i never lose that
