Gabriel didn't leave immediately. At first he stayed. He begged and pleaded for his brothers to see sense, but they wouldn't listen. Yet still he stayed. He stayed until it was clear what sort of monsters his brothers were turning into.
Now Lucifer is out of his cage and the War is raging, except this time Gabriel can't simply leave and he finds himself getting dragged back into a conflict that never should have escalated to this point. He does what he can to help the Winchester's and his little brother to find a way to put a stop to the apocalypse, but this new war is bringing up unpleasant memories that he had thought long behind him.
Sort of an alternate Season 5 from after a few episodes in. This wasn't originally intended to be mostly Gabriel's story, but the Trickster has a way of taking over things.
