The Excalibur-Giver in Post-Vulgate
It should be made aware that this lady gets killed by Balin later on. While the character Ninianne/Vivian/Nimue appears after that, during Arthur and Gwen's wedding.
So, the Mystical Hand is never explained - it's not the Excalibur Giver herself. While the lady did apparently create this lake, according to Merlin, the weird hand thing is still an unexplained moment.
Which makes me wonder "What is even the point of the Excalibur from the Lake?" For a long time, I always thought it was supposed to explain why King Arthur threw the sword into the lake back in the original Vulgate, but here, Arthur doesn't even directly go to the hand itself nor is there any agreement to return Excalibur to the Lake.
In a hilarious bit, the Lady who gets the sword for Arthur was nearly super-late to the affair. You can imagine her driving through traffic, messy hair and drive-thru starbucks in hand.
It is notable that his lady - the "Excalibur-Giver" - is NOT actually called "Lady of the Lake". Contrary to what Malory implies, "Lady of the Lake" is apparently Nimue/Vivian's sole title alone.
The Knight of The Cart segment of Vulgate has so many banger moments but honestly one of the best is when Guinevere calls out to only Ninianne (Vulgate Lady of The Lake) because she doesn't know if Lancelot is alive or dead, even doing so in lieu of God.
From Part IV, Chapter 111, Page 27 of The Lancelot-Grail Cycle
Which then she actually does, eventually leading Ninianne to reveal in private to her that Lancelot is in fact alive. Imagine having a friend so good you can call on them like you would with God and they answer.

One of the best friendships in Arthuriana for me, it's just Peak.
Merlin and Ninianne (Lady of the Lake) come upon two harpists on thrones, Suite de Merlin ('the Huth Manuscript’), Add MS 38117, f. 185r, 14th century

The few times we get to hear about Nimue's dad and Nimue's home country of Northumberland, Brittany.
