On May 15th a critical Nest product will go dark. I’m shocked this isn’t bigger news.

Nest is shutting down Revolv on May 15. No announcement made, just this FU notice posted:

If you have some time introspection, click on the “Revolv” tag. In August 2013, I wrote “$300 no monthly fees (why would their be?)”. Well now we have the answer: to keep the lights on.

Ninja Blocks is gone too. Wink has accidentally been bricked, but is almost certain - with its hobbyist unfriendly interface - to join the list. Staples Connect is still around, though it never made it into Canada. Will Samsung support SmartThings V1 hubs in 10 years time?

Sad news from Ninja Blocks - they ran out of money to complete the Ninja Sphere project.

tl;dr - Ninja Blocks is out of money, so we can no longer keep developing Sphere. We’re going dark so we can continue to keep the cloud services running, and shipping all but 300 of the owed Spheres to kickstarter backers over the next few months. Everything has been open sourced, and we’ll be here to help the community keep developing it if they want to. As a company, we might be back at some point, but nothing is solid right now.

Ninja Blocks

Ninja Blocks는 앞서 소개한 Twine 처럼 여러 종류의 센서나 사물, 전자제품들을 인터넷에 연결 시켜 준다. 유선 이더넷이나 WiFi로 인터넷과 연결 가능하며 다양한 센서나 액츄에이터(Actuator)들과는 433MHz RF 무선 통신을 통해 연결된다.

Ninja Blocks 역시 Twine과 같이 클라우드 서비스를 통해 웹브라우저나 스마트폰 등으로 언제 어디서나 Ninja Blocks를 설정하고 모니터링 할 수 있으며 특정 트리거(Trigger)에 대해 조건을 만족 하는 경우 특정 동작을 실행 하도록 설정 할 수 있다.

Ninja Blocks는 Twine과 달리 센서 외에도 조명, 전원 아울렛 등의 제어 가능 한 액츄에이터(Actuator)를 연결 시 킬 수 있다는 것이 특징이다. 따라서 Ninja Blocks는 Twine에 비해 더욱 확장 된 IFTTT (If Than That This) 시나리오가 가능하다. 

예를들어 Twine의 경우 동작 센서 등에 침입이 감지되면 그것을 사용자에게 트위터나 SMS 등으로 알려주지만 Ninja blocks는 여기서 그치지 않고 사이렌을 울리거나 조명을 켜는 등 사물이나 전자제품을 제어 할 수 있다.

Über das Internet der Dinge...

wird schon lange geredet. Für mich gehört auch der kleine Drucker in diese Kategorie. Nun geht es vorwärts! Keine grosse Firma, sondern drei Tüftler haben über Kickstarter die interessante Idee mit den Ninja Blocks zum rollen gebracht. Ich freue mich auf tausende von DIY-Ideen.

Ein Kasten, der einfache Interaktion zwischen seinen Sensoren und dem  Internet ermöglicht.

While I’m not completely following the pitch, I do understand the concept. Ninja Blocks are mini computers with sensors which make them environment aware. They sense light, motion, and temperature. And they can be programmed so that upon sensing something they take action.

They can perform familiar tasks such as turning on lights and more advanced tasks such as emailing you when a package arrives at your door or posting tweets on your behalf via pre-defined triggers.

There are two things I love about Ninja Blocks that differentiate them from other comparable products:

Its basic tasks are plug-and-play for the layperson.

Its hardware is open source, enabling the adventurous to build custom sensors and internal components.

The proprietors began their journey on Kickstarter like a lot of startups these days. And they received $103,000 while asking for $24,000. The public is certainly ready for these little ninjas. Congratulations, Maddy, Marcus, and Mark!

A Startup Puts the Internet in Your Couch Cushions - Technology Review

Sensor-filled Ninja Blocks connect the Web with whatever's nearby.

Whoever has been stealing Mark Wotton's newspaper should look out: He's formulating a revenge plan, and it involves ninjas.

Well, technically, it involves Ninja Blocks—little computerized, sensor-equipped boxes that Wotton helped create. The blocks connect to the Internet to carry out preset actions in response to stimuli. For example, via an online service called Ninja Cloud, Wotton could set a Ninja Block equipped with a motion detector to automatically take photos of the paper thief and upload them to Facebook.

A Ninja Block might also be programmed to turn on a hall light when a child cries in her crib, or sound an alarm when the cat jumps onto the sofa. Wotton built the small devices and corresponding Web service with two cofounders. "Chances are people will have good ideas [for the devices] we've never thought of," says Wotton, the company's chief technical officer.
