Hey video games mean a lot to some people and it’s ok to build an identity and community around it like comic books, book clubs, board games, movie buffs, foodies and such have. I get the obnoxious side of the culture and the inaccessibility that stems from straight white boys gate keeping, but that doesn’t mean people who have this interest and are really into it are weird and instant gatekeepers.

A few things

I think I made it pretty damn clear that I love video games and non-awful people who like them, your “not all gamers” comment is totally unnecessary, since I literally pointed to that in the post you’re responding to. No one is saying video games are evil or that people shouldn’t enjoy them or be interested in them or find them meaningful.

“Gamers” are people who tell themselves that other people don’t like video games because they aren’t smart enough or good enough to really “get” them. They operate on the assumption that they’re able to do, or understand, something that most people are unable to grasp, which makes them better (or even just different) from most people. The foundation of “gamer” as an identity and personality type is the idea that exclusivity and quality are linked.

See, the difference between a gamer and a person who likes video games becomes clear whenever circumstances cause an influx of “noobs.” For example, an Overwatch free weekend or the Gay Tracer announcement, both of which sent new players enthusiastically flocking into the game.

A “person who likes video games” would probably be pleased with their interest’s boom in popularity and excited to have new people to share it with (personally I used both as an opportunity to share the game with lots of people, some of whom had never really gotten into games before).

A “gamer” would be upset at the decision because they see the influx of new players as a bad thing. Instead of being happy to have more people to play with, they’re upset that these “noobs” aren’t already at their skill level, and aren’t already versed in the intricate etiquette of the community.

The thing that separates “people who like games” from “gamers” is the attitude towards ease and accessibility. People who like games generally don’t mind their interest becoming popular or care about people using easier settings. Gamers equate difficulty and exclusivity with quality, because they’ve created their own little world that’s hostile to anyone who’s not Them, and then like to pat themselves on the back for being the only ones smart enough to survive it.

You’ll also see them complaining a lot about this idea that “Games shouldn’t be dumbed down for the general population,” because they really think they’re smarter than the general population and that making games more accessible would necessarily mean making them worse so the general population (who they think are all blithering idiots compared to the Mighty Intellect Of The Gamer) could understand them.

Anyway yeah if you slapped duct tape on every gamer’s mouth and banned them from posting about video games on the internet permanently, video games as a genre would increase 10,000% in popularity by the end of the year even if you didn’t change literally anything about the games themselves
