time to talk a bit about some of the #movies we saw last week at the #nipponconnection. ( for the plots you can read the english descriptions ) 1 river's edge was my favourite movie of all the 5 we watched. it was super intense & captivating, depicting teenagedom in a very truthful way. that's what teenagers go through, it's dramatic & cruel, but this is, in my opinion, what growing up feels like. 2 thunder & moon was that quiet, atmospheric little movie with focus on the subtleties of love, about the sometimes uneventful way life develops and what happens when the past is affecting your life. i loved this lots, because i could identify with yasuko so much... 3 wilderness pt. 1 & 2 - this 5 hour movie was for sure demanding, and while i am still very dissatisfied with many aspects of it, i keep thinking about it. actually i loved the basic story, but it was way too long and it included totally unnecessary side plots. it also happens to be based on a story about homosexuality, and i felt like it wasn't presented properly ( it would've made the film so much better ). also, i learned afterwards that the supporting role is actually the main character in the book, which tbh made it even more dissatisfying, because i ADORED kenji. truly. he made the whole movie for me. his shyness, the stuttering, his backstory, everything. the friendship / unrequited feelings between him and shinji was lovely, but it lacked the depth it probably should've had. despite all the negative aspects of the movie & the very unfulfilling & tragic end, this movie will probably stay in my brain for a long time, if only for the frustration i felt during all of it ( i so rooted for kenji ;_; ). #movierecs #japanesefilms #series
