Day 2: First day at the shelter in Nisipari

I wasn't prepared for what I saw today in Nisipari. Completely overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of what needs to be done and how many dogs are in need of good homes. These are all really excellent animals- friendly, affectionate, playful. They all just want a sofa to curl up on or a ball to play with. They just want a pal. Gea and her team do a great job on limited resources. All the dogs are fed & watered and are checked over by the vets for Heartworm, Parvovirus, Distemper and all the usual ailments one would normally check for in the UK. Distemper is particularly horrible. Last night a puppy that Gea was caring for unfortunately died. It was too far gone. Most of the dogs at Barking Mad Dog Rescue come from the public shelter. They are taken there by dog catchers who are paid by the government. The dogs are destroyed after being in the public shelter for 14 days (or 3 months for puppies). It seems strange that the government would pay to have the dogs caught and destroyed than perhaps investing in a programme of neutering, however as this is not my country I shall confine my judgement to that statement. It's a worthy charity and they do so much on very little. Hilary who runs it works herself to the bone.
