It was the scene in Richard Ayoade’s film The Double that made me realize how much this song means to me. Jesse Eisenberg’s character is on a tenuous first date, money goes in the jukebox, the music starts up, and I'm in tears. As a half-Japanese kid in the 90′s, this song crushed at family karaoke. But I was in Indiana far away from my Okinawan family. Confused about my roots.
So anyway, it was an honor to mash this 60′s J-pop classic with the indie rock I grew up on. Hope you enjoy!

“This is the time to be the allies we needed in World War II. We are the front line that says, ‘Never again.’ ”
Micheal Ishii, 51, of Queens said hatred, discrimination and violence against Japanese-Americans was not limited to the West Coast. He said that in 1942, his great-uncle was shot to death at his home in Dutchess County, and the great-uncle’s mother and wife injured, in an anti-Japanese hate crime. Ishii urged fellow Japanese-Americans to support Muslims.
HEART MTN. is a musical collaboration / art project between Like Trees frontman, Micah Chibana, and Like Trees affiliate, Chris Gaalaas. Over the past year, we met and spontaneously wrote songs together. Recorded quickly, bounced to CD-R, with spray paint through a stencil. DM, if you’d like one (limited copies available).
We wanted a name that reflected our process. Sometimes it’s hard to realize how much we have hidden inside. This was an opportunity to stay connected to our deepest feelings. And to recognize the world we live in--one that is currently not safe and welcoming to all, equally. The privilege of making art gives us a measure of personal peace. We hope for the same for others.
