似る（にる ; niru) - to resemble, look like, be similar

used in ～ている form most of the time since resembling something is a continuing status/condition

～（に）似ている = resembles ~

ex. これは猫に似ている犬です。(kore wa neko ni niteiru inu desu) - This is a dog which resembles a cat.

ex. 彼女は性格が姉に似ています。(kanojyo wa seikaku ga ane ni niteimasu) - Her personality resembles that of her older sister.

ex. たいていの男の子は父親に似る。(taitei no otoko no ko wa chichi oya ni niru) - Most boys take after (resemble) their father.
