Help Nix Comics get its latest issue out in time to shine at the Cartoons Crossroads Columbus Expo!
What have I been up to recently? Well, I somehow tripped into working with Matt Miner, a writer who I’ve been a fan of since I discovered Toe Tag Riot a year ago.
He wrote, I doodled, and I come to find it’s actually part of an awesome rock n roll horror comic anthology?!?!?
Just in time for Halloween!
Buck Slaughter's Book of Rock 'n' Roll Facts #1 - Ken Eppstein Relives His Record Store Days in His Solo Debut Comic
Buck Slaughter’s Book of Rock’n’Roll Facts, writer/publisher Ken Eppstein’s first fully solo release, is both a straightforward collection of vignettes inspired by his record store days and a gently mocking send-up of obsessive fandom – one that channels the same DIY energy as the garage and punk rock music it celebrates. Eppstein’s book, which fittingly debuted on Record Store Day at Columbus,…

Buck Slaughter's Book of Rock 'N Roll Facts Written and Illustrated by Ken Eppstein Published by Nix Comics 5.5"x8.5" 32 pages B&W Cover Price Five Bucks
Buck Slaughter is the cantankerous and opinionated owner of a tiny record store with a grand total of two regular customers. Buck's taste is exquisite (just ask him) and he's more than willing to let you know who's who and what's what in the history of rock and roll. Fiction based on actual nonsense muttered by Nix Comics creator Ken Eppstein when he was a record store owner. To be released on April 16th, 2016 (Record Store Day, Natch!) at Lost Weekend Records! Available fro Pre-order at nixcomics.com
Nix Comics Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nixcomics/nix-comics-quarterly-8-thee-garage-rock-horror-ant The very first piece of art that I commissioned for Nix Comics Quarterly #8 was the cover. I’ve been “sitting on it” for a while... It was the end of 2013 and I needed the cover for for the 2014 subscription drive. Nearly two years later I am preparing to send issue #8 to those subscribers! Keeping with Nix Comics themes, John chose to lampoon a great Kirby House of Mystery cover, changing the sailors to record biz suits and the living moai to avatars of the real creators of rock... Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, et. al.
Here is some of John’s process work on the cover. My edits were pretty limited... Asking that the business men have some Marvel era kirby purple and green added to their suits.
I had met John earlier in 2013 at the CCAD Mix Symposium and had been following his Black Kirby work closely. (A nom de guerre that John shares with Stacey Robinson) I feel lucky that he was interested in doing work with Nix Comics and I’m excited about how terrific the cover turned out!
You can grab a copy on Kickstarter for $4 plus shipping.
Take a look at this kicksstarter and the video: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nixcomics/nix-comics-quarterly-8-thee-garage-rock-horror-ant Sometimes I revel in my crabby-old-man attitudes and sometimes I recognize that those attitudes lead to mem shooting myself in the foot. I really don’t dig on kickstarter videos as a rule. Something about having to make a video to sell a print comic really burns me, so I went out of my way to make a vid for this latest crowdfunder that had NOTHING to do with the coming I’m trying to launch.
It was pointed out to me that thgis might not be the best way to get pledges from people who don’t know about my oppositionally defiant charms, so I made a quick edit, added an homage to my favorite grumpy album cover and called it a day!
Another prime example of Columbus Ohio taking care of it’s own and utilizing it's vast comic artist resources: Natalie’s using prolific Scene Artist and sometimes Nix illustrator Matt Wyatt I'm their in-house calendars!
