I’ve been working throughout the last year to reduce my waste (especially plastic waste), and my period was one place that I was struggling with figuring out. But I knew I had to do it—I figured I probably use close to two dozen pads and tampons (plus wrappers and other packaging) each cycle and was probably spending $15 a cycle on products (so $300 a year). I’m hoping this disc works, because even though it was a bit much at the front end (about $50), it’ll pay for itself in 3 cycles and is estimated to last at least five years.
I’d been hesitant to switch to low/zero-waste period products, because they seemed like such a hassle and hard to use and clean. And the suction part of using cups really freaked me out since I use an IUD (there’s only anecdotal evidence about cups dislodging IUDs; a study from NIH found no higher levels of dislodging with menstrual cup usage than in people who use pads and tampons. But it still weirded me out too much). But I came across this product (Nixit menstrual disc) that’s not held in place by suction, but rests behind the pubic bone higher up than where a cup would sit. And I’m super excited to usd it!
