Description:

A striking example of monumental sculpture, this colossus expresses the stability and strength of the king through its solid rendering of the musculature and its geometric volumes and contours. Sethi II is shown standing with his left leg forward to express his capability to walk and act. He holds a standard with a figure of the god Amon at the top. Along with a similar colossus now in the Louvre, this statue was originally located at the entrance of the chapel built by Sethi II in the large courtyard of the temple of Karnak.

Shroud of Hori - Met Museum Collection

Description:

This colorful scene depicts Hori at his funerary meal, wearing a cone of fragrant incense on his head. The heaped table is described as "an offering of all things good and pure for the spirit of the Osiris Hori, justified." The offerings include three white loaves of bread, a cut of meat, and various vegetables. Beneath the table are two sealed jars of beer. The scene was painted on a linen sheet that was probably a shroud laid over Hori's coffin.

Description:

Scenes of the deceased seated at an offering table or receiving offerings of food from their children represent the outcome of Egyptian funerary rites. The dead have achieved blessed status through ritual, and now receive the sustenance that allows them to survive eternally.

The eldest son was responsible for the funeral and cult of the deceased. To the left, the eldest son of Djehutyemhab extends a tall bouquet to his father, whose image is only partly preserved. Other children follow bringing fruit, fish, birds, and a small calf.

On the right, Djehutyemhab and his wife, Baketkhonsu, are seated before an offering table.

Djehutyemhab took over an unfinished tomb from an earlier owner. Here, the earlier multicolored hieroglyphs contrast with Djehutyemhab’s simple red additions.

Kneeling official - Met Museum Collection

Description:

The number of examples of nonroyal statuettes in poses and stances typical for use in burials diminishes greatly in the New Kingdom, reflecting a general shift in funerary practices away from the deposition of statuary in tombs and toward placement in temples. This figure is the earliest metal statuette of a nonroyal man that can be ascribed to a shrine or temple provenance because of its ritual worshipping pose. It is datable to the late Nineteenth or Twentieth Dynasty based on the style of the official's hair and garments as well as the style of his face, which shows no influences of the earlier Amarna period. The statuette's open core cavity, without core supports, and its long, irregularly shaped tangs (not visible when the figure is displayed) also support such a date.

The Barque of Amun Arriving at the West Bank of Thebes - Met Museum Collection

Description:

During the Beautiful Festival of the Valley, statues of the deities Amun, Mut, and Khonsu left Karnak temple to journey across the Nile and visit other temples. The procession also passed many private tombs, where people gathered for elaborate banquets.

At the top here, the boat of Amun with ram’s heads at each end carries a shrine that houses the deity’s statue. Though the statue of Amun was not visible, the mere sight of his golden shrine, which was usually in the restricted areas of the temple, must have been a spectacular event for the elated throng of followers. The ship has just moored and is greeted by a statue of the deified king Amenhotep I, which will join the procession. Below a bark with a statue of the deified queen Ahmose Nefertari is being dragged on a sledge.
