After spotting her at the wedding, Quinn had been trying to draw her out, sending her messages until finally, guilt got the best of her. Earlier, she’d joined them to pick pumpkins at the patch, now sitting quietly by Quinn’s side, half-focused as she carved her pumpkin. Azlee had always adored Spooky Season. This was her first real outing since the attack, and Halloween, her favorite holiday, despite it being her birthday, felt special. She had witnessed its origins firsthand; back in the day, it was a time for revering the spirits, not just costumes and candy. Not long after she and her siblings became vampires and ended their father’s tyranny, Azlee had ventured to Celtic Ireland, joining in the Samhain festivities. Practices like leaving food offerings for the aos sí to ensure peace, lighting bonfires to assist with divination rituals, and carving scary faces into turnips to ward off evil spirits, all to honor the dead, felt profound for the young vampire, who was still coming to terms with her newfound immortality. Now, though Halloween was more of a playful celebration, she loved it just the same, still observing a few Samhain traditions quietly on her own, honoring the roots that made the season meaningful to her. Standing in line for popcorn at the theater to see Salem’s Lot, Azlee turned to Adelina, a soft smile tugging at her lips. “It’s strange,” she murmured, “how a holiday that once honored the spirits has become something so… lighthearted.
