Nomadique Artist Workshop Dinners: Year in Review
We had the privilege of workshopping a wide variety of projects this year from multiple disciplines; illustration, music, photography, and film to name a few.
It's been a little over a year since our first dinner. Here's a recap of the wonderful artists we've hosted and the work that they presented! A huge thank you for the vulnerability, bravery, and constructive feedback of all of the incredible artists who have helped these dinners thrive.
December 2012
Michael George (website/blog) a photography portfolio that summarized his creative voice over the past few years.
Michelle Watt (blog) presented her large photographic tableaux pieces.
Sasha Arutyunova (website/blog) presented photography prints from her recent travels to Russia and Canada, as she began to build a project.
January 2013
Ethan Goldwater (website) presented a rough assembly of his short documentary about a woman named Joni.
Ben Stamper (website) presented three short video compositions in the spirit of Haiku poetry, for their brevity and unadorned train of thought. These pieces aim to strike a balance between the beauty and the unseemliness of our arrangement with the earth.
Alix Pentecost-Farren (website) presented a short autobiographical comic about growing up with an extraterrestrial family, as well as a series of in-progress comics about riding the subway.
February 2013
Margaret Glaspy (blog) presented poetry about love and loss in New York City.
Michael George (website/blog) presented a short story called "The Human Factory", a fictional creation tale that explores the origin of humanity's flaws.
Russell Durham (youtube) presented two solo violin compositions.
May 2013
Jas Walton (website) presented demos of scores that he had composed. His aim was to bring physical, hip-hop sensibilities to live music in a different context.
Ryan Patch & Michael Koehler screened a rough cut of their film The Offering, which follows a father and son into the woods to make an offering to a mysterious force.
Katrina Sorrentino & Isabel Castro (website) presented an eight-minute teaser from their documentary Crossing Over, about three transgender immigrants from Mexico who are seeking political asylum in the United States.
June 2013
Sasha Arutyunova (website/blog) presented a sequence of photographs exploring her relationship with her family in Russia.
Julia Easterlin (website) presented "Eliza Jane", an anthem about the birth of her little sister and the consequent shift in family dynamics. It is also her first song composed on the celtic harp.
Andrew Ellis (website/blog) presented a rough cut of Nomadique's short documentary Eleanor Ambos Interiors.
Jonathan Seale (website) presented two new group sing-a-long songs.
July 2013
Kris Nolte (website) presented a memory project celebrating the life of Byron Burroughs, an unknown neighbor whose treasured belongings were found dumped out on the curb. This presentation was later showcased at our group art show "These Rhythmic Seasons".
Katie Kenyon presented an in-progress painting, inspired by a photograph of her friends.
Katrina Sorrentino (website/blog) presented a rough cut of a short lyrical documentary about her grandmother entitled Going Blind.
Dusty Nakao-Haider presented a trailer and short scene about his feature length documentary on inner-city youth and basketball in Chicago.
August 2013
Sasha Arutyunova (website/blog) presented a photo series about her sister Diana, that was later showcased at Nomadique Collections' "These Rhythmic Seasons" exhibition.
Ryan Patch screened a completed cut of The Offering.
Stefan Weiner (website) presented a completed version of his song "Sweetly", which is about a couple planning for their decrepitude, specifically for dementia, and the threat that the disease poses to long-term love.
September 2013
Ethan Goldwater (website) presented a multimedia project entitled "Collisions in Cycles" from his trip to Uzbekistan.
Andrew Ellis (website/blog) presented a rough cut of They Came At Night, a film he made with Discover the Journey. It is about an abducted child soldier in central Africa who risks his life in an attempt to flee from Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army after years of captivity.
October 2013
Georgia Johnson (blog) presented "The Universe Is Playing With Me", a short story about falling in love, and the magical connection between inner transformation and outer reality.
Andrew Ellis (website/blog) screened a completed cut of They Came At Night.
November 2013
Phil Primason (website) read an excerpt from his as-yet untitled story about a disgraced Lebanese dentist in an existential tailspin.
Michael Koehler presented "The Land Without Evil," a short story about a young American who joins with an ethnic resistance movement in the jungles of Southeast Asia. It is a coming-of-age story about the death of an ideal, set against the backdrop of a civil war.
Jon Seale, Alix Pentecost-Farren & Russell Durham presented an animated film about Chinese artist Xu Bing and his giant Phoenix sculptures.
December 2013
Julia Easterlin (website) presented a simple vocal and harp mix of "Eliza Jane" along with a mix of "Stay", a minimalist dance track entreating a lover to remain with her despite her own tendency to run.
Ben Stamper (website) presented a rough cut from his feature documentary Don't Foil My Plans, which follows the life and work of Justin Canha, a New Jersey-based artist in his mid-twenties whose diagnosis places him in the middle of the autism spectrum.
Katrina Sorrentino (website/blog) presented a rough cut of a video travel diary from Korea as well as a completed cut of her short lyrical documentary Going Blind.
