A LIVING TOGETHER: A Multimedia Group Art Exhibition Exploring the Nature of Symbiosis

Common rhetoric tells us that nature is a force to be dominated, that strangers will surely swindle us, loved ones will one day betray us, and technology will soon overtake us. In our quest to survive and grow, we often extol individuality and self-sufficiency as virtues.

Yet when we take a closer look at what survival entails, we discover an unexpectedly rich and complex network that challenges the very notion of the discrete, disconnected organism. In A Living Together, artists and musicians explore the nature of human and non-human interdependency, inviting our viewers to consider the relationships that make up their own existence.

We’re honored to feature the work of two Magnum photographers, Christopher Anderson and Peter van Agtmael, as well as brand new drawings from Alix Pentecost Farren, a new painting by Xinran Yuan, and a new installation of macro and micro proportions by Dana Michele Hemes. The gallery will be accompanied by a concert curated by Found Sound Nation.

Two Magnum Photographers Exhibit Work in One Night Only Pop-Up Show

Found Sound Nation and Nomadique have collaborated to present a one night only, multimedia pop-up event at Pioneer Works on Sunday, January 17. Nomadique curated the gallery presentations for the event while Found Sound Nation curated the music, which includes performances from the Black Sea Hotel, Jonah Parzen-Johnson, Alpenglow, and Tenores de Aterue.

Among the artists showing work in the exhibition titled “A Living Together” are two Magnum photographers: Christopher Anderson and Peter van Agtmael. The show explores the nature of symbiosis through the combination of sound and sight and invites viewers to question their own personal interdependent relationships.

“Nomadique’s exhibitions were born out of a desire to transform the gallery experience, and to cultivate a community in which friends and artistic collaborators inspire and motivate each other through an exchange with an open and intentional audience,” the members of Nomadique stated in a press release about this show. “Each show addresses a core human theme through the varied perspectives of a broad range of multimedia artists.”

Canadian-born photographer Christopher Anderson initially gained recognition for his work in 1999 when he boarded a handmade, wooden boat with Haitian refugees trying to sail to America, the images from that journey later receiving the Robert Capa Gold Medal. He is currently New York Magazine’s first photographer-in residence.

Anderson is showing work from his series “SON” in which he captures the raw beauty and intricacies of family life that are often overlooked. His father’s lung cancer diagnosis and the beginning of his son’s life overlapped, causing Anderson to explore the relationship between life and death through his photography.

Peter van Agtmael, also a Magnum photographer, has been documenting the consequences of America’s wars through his images since 2006.

Whether the tension between life and death or the more literal clash of the nation’s wars, both photographers explore the relationships between two forces and the concept of symbiosis.

When Nella Met Paris

La Tour Eiffel is sparkling at me, her headlight making its rounds across the city and nation (center and periphery alike) of my dreams. Passersby ask me for directions and I feel relieved. Perhaps it is our arrival here juxtaposed against locals of Venice and Barcelona tired of english speaking tourists. Yet in Paris we’ve been welcomed since arrival twenty eight hours ago when we walked off the runway into a black car driven by a sleek suit who whisked us into the folds of the city in a leather interior. A modern day chariot to welcome us home from a long (lifetime) sejour a l’etranger. 

Our first descent into the city was for Fete de la Musique, a music festival in honor of solar duration. Summer solstice in the City of Light lived beyond every anticipation. Although I had purposefully arranged our coordinate planes to capture this moment in space-time, I was unsure what we would find. And so with pan au raisin, water bottle, and one diaper we plunged in to discover.

The metro, where beautiful people of all features weave in and out, spoke a different urban language. No one’s elegance was assaulted by mysterious stains or people you don't want to touch. When we ascended after an hour ride, the street was filled with melodies from every direction, as each street held layers of and the ears became a map through which the long-awaited acquaintance was finally made: the atmosphere of Paris, embodied.

Last night (April 30th, 2015) marked the opening of Inner Circles, Nomadique's 2015 gallery exhibition and show.

After weeks of sleepless nights on the part of the NMDQ team, the show opened to rave reviews.

We're honored to feature the work of many Nomadique community members and collaborators, as well as several new friends, and work culled from over 300 submissions that we received in response to our open call.

While opening night featured performances by Hasidic Jewish rockers Zusha, soulful duo Big Thief, and Bulgarian songstress Shelley Thomas, we're excited to present story teller Adam Wade, performance artist Kenyon Adams and songwriter Mt Davidson (Twain) at tonight's follow up to close the exhibition.

Nomadique is seeking submissions for our upcoming multimedia art exhibition, inviting artists to reflect on the sensation of belonging. The pop-up show will be held in New York City in mid April and will feature live performances, film screenings, and a gallery display.

Submitted works may reflect on the following questions: To what do we belong and why? How does an anxiety of belonging impact our development and behavior? How does belonging affect our sense of purpose? Does belonging necessitate exclusion by nature?

One cannot choose to belong to a given group or community; belonging inherently necessitates both an invitation from the outside and an assent from within. We can love someone without their consent, but we cannot belong without their agreement. This complex dynamic is part of what makes belonging central to our home and family lives, our national and cultural identities, and our religious and spiritual beliefs.

Entries include but are not limited to: film, photography, illustration, live stories, musical performances, dance, and written word.

Nomadique Collections is an art show series created to cultivate community, a community in which friends and artistic collaborators inspire and motivate each other by sharing their work in an unconventional and immersive gallery environment. The series aims to foster the connections that come from an exchange with an open and intentional audience.

How the Unsung New York Designer Became an Accidental Property Mogul

Nomadique took a retreat upstate to plot our vision for the year. Our goal setting and art show planning were interspersed by dancing on a frozen lake and exploring ice caves.

The people in these photos are my friends who I find myself growing up with. I love them so.

Also, these are the first exposures with my Hasselblad. Turns out, loading film in the blistering snow is an exciting way to get to know a new camera.
