artist research : Nnenna Okore
sculpture
Nigerian artist Nnenna Okore creates large, dramatic textile installations that resemble moving forms and reflect on wildlife and craft culture she encountered in Nigeria during her childhood. she achieves this through weaving, dyeing, winding and teasing material like burlap, wire and paper.
i really enjoy the biological aspect of these sculptures, how they resemble inner biological structures like veins and nerves, and the way in which she weaves them together using fabric and other material to create such dynamic textures. i think it would be interesting to explore a technique like this further in my own project and create more natural looking forms.
