story - project statement

for ‘story’ , i began by thinking of songs and novels that could provide interesting imagery to use. i settled with kafka’s metamorphosis, a story about a man who wakes to find he’s been transformed into a large bug-like creature.

i found the themes present in this story, alienation, body horror, loneliness and fear to be very interesting and similar to a song by fka twings “fallen alien”, which has similar themes and imagery .

i chose to work mostly for my animation elective, and thought up a storyboard and characters trying to incorporate the themes of alienation and body horror, as well as the imagery regarding metamorphosis. i designed characters based on these ideas, blending human and bug features to create “alien” characters

pictures of the 3D model of my spider-mom character after i painted the details onto her. i’m pretty happy with how she turned out.

diorama process

process pictures of the 3D model of spider - mom character that i designed in 2D earlier , made using tinfoil wrapped in masking tape as a base. i covered that with plasticine before painting oversaw i had no clay at home.

i used the same process of tinfoil and masking tape for the legs, but instead only painted over them.

i like how in both films, the set designs and colour pallets are used to create a mood and convey emotions with little computer editing

plans for 3D diorama using a scene from the storyboard i drew earlier, of the spiderxmom character in the kitchen

i cut the base structure for the kitchen diorama from an old cardboard box, and added texture to the walls using tissue paper and glue before painting over them

yesterday we had a zoom workshop with yvonne, where we were given character prompts and had to design a 3D model based off the prompt.

the prompt i was given was “cowboy” , and i chose to attempt to make a model from cardboard and masking tape

follows the basic premise of a girl waking to a world in which everyone she knows is transformed/changed into alien-like monsters. in her flight, she follows a “ball of light” inspired by lyrics from fka twigs, in the hopes it will “guide her out” from this “age of satan” (more lyrics ) only to find herself equally changed by the end

artist research : akino kondoh

“KiyaKiya” is a series of works by Japanese artist Akino Kondoh, which explore feelings of eery déjà-vu which childhood memories can trigger. With their dark mood and enigmatic symbolism, her characters’ surreal adventures evoke the ways our childhood fears and anxieties were once magnified in our nightmares.
