11 non-governmental organisations urge Khalid to quit
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13, 2014:
Eleven non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have come together to urge Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to resign from his position.
In a joint press conference at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) here, they said that Abdul Khalid was already voted out of the party, hence he should “gracefully bow out”.
KLSCAH chairman Tan Yew Sing said Selangor was not a presidential democracy, hence Abdul Khalid had no direct and personal mandate.
“By not only clinging on to power, but further announcing the sacking of his executive councillors from PKR and DAP, Abdul Khalid has doubly denounced democracy and betrayed the electorate.”
Tan added that Abdul Khalid had also yet to prove that he had majority support to retain his role, questioning the basis on which he is still holding on to the MB position.
“He claimed to have majority support of the state legislative assembly. Yet, he did not call for an assembly meeting to confirm his vote of confidence.
“In a normal democratic system, he should morally reaffirm the people’s support of him,” added Tan.
At the same time, the group has also called for PAS to make clear its stand and support in the current circumstances.
Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (Ikram) vice-president Zaid Kamaruddin said for the sake of the rakyat, PAS needed to make their stand clear, which will determine the future of Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
“The issue of the mandate given to PAS to be part of PR should be taken into consideration by PAS,” he said.
Others present were Stanley Yong Yew Wei, secretary-general of KLSCAH who said that the situation had shown that politicians in the country lacked morality and credibility.
“In the case of the MB, he has shown neglect for the citizens and at the same time used loopholes to maintain his power.
“I strongly feel that since there are rumours that Tan Sri Abdul Khalid committed unhealthy dealings and abused his power, he should in public show that he is innocent before announcing he will hang on to his power,” added Yong.
The other NGOs represented today were Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM), Pusat Komunikasi Masyarakat, Saya Anak Bangsar Malaysia and Perasatuan Masyarakat Selangor dan Wilayah Persekutuan among others.
