I've been playing board games for quite some time now, and I regret not starting sooner. It's a shame that there isn't a big board game culture in my country. Every time I tell someone I play board games, they always say, "Oh, so you play Monopoly?", and every time, it feels like I'm dying inside.

No, I don't play Monopoly. 😡

First of all, there are thousands of board games that are far superior, especially since Monopoly wasn't designed to be fun. I'd even go so far as to say it's not even a real game, but this is just my personal opinion.

I won't go into the history of how it came to be, but the original version of Monopoly (The Landlord's Game) was designed as a teaching tool to illustrate the single-tax theory of economist Henry George. The main points were to demonstrate that monopolies are bad and to give the winner the illusion of being a skilled landowner, leaving most players feeling frustrated, failed, and poor. 💸💸💸 There's no real way for losing players to recover, and who's winning continues to make money faster than everyone else until the game ends. And the luck factor is almost entirely irrelevant, except for turn order, as the first player has a higher chance of getting properties early on. 💰💰💰

Anyway, that's my daily rant.

“I’m working on an alternative, clean implementation of the federated social network GNU Social, called Mastodon. Mastodon is an open-source server that integrates with other GNU Social (and other compatible) networks. The entire network is like an unlimited number of different Twitter websites, users of which can follow each other and interact regardless of which Twitter website exactly they are on. This has obvious benefits as there is no single company that has a monopoly.

Currently the only viable implementation of such a server is GNU Social itself. It is good, but difficult to install, and having a long legacy of different projects being merged, the codebase is harder to maintain. That is why I am working on Mastodon, a re-implementation using Ruby on Rails, with the ability to be quickly deployed on a new machine using Docker. The focus is also on a clean, modern and snappy user interface.
