Hey followers and especially mutuals, what federated social media do you use (stuff like Mastodon or GNU Social)? Specifically, what servers are you part of? I want to switch over, but I'm overwhelmed by choice and I don't want to end up in some kind of normie/TERF server. I really like the anarchist/liberationist/shitposting/philosophical/autistic vibe of the blogs I follow and I want to recreate that in a way that's not gonna get destroyed by shitty executives.

Have You Joined the Fediverse?
This post will be somewhat different, as it doesn’t concern the “dark web,” but it is an alternative network of sorts. If the term “fediverse” doesn’t sound familiar, then allow me to quote the definition from LinuxReviews, because that covers it pretty well:
Fediverse is a loose term for a network of social network servers which form an alternative to centralized social network platforms like…

MASTODON

MASTODON
“I’m working on an alternative, clean implementation of the federated social network GNU Social, called Mastodon. Mastodon is an open-source server that integrates with other GNU Social (and other compatible) networks. The entire network is like an unlimited number of different Twitter websites, users of which can follow each other and interact regardless of which Twitter website exactly they are on. This has obvious benefits as there is no single company that has a monopoly.

Currently the only viable implementation of such a server is GNU Social itself. It is good, but difficult to install, and having a long legacy of different projects being merged, the codebase is harder to maintain. That is why I am working on Mastodon, a re-implementation using Ruby on Rails, with the ability to be quickly deployed on a new machine using Docker. The focus is also on a clean, modern and snappy user interface.
The project can be followed on GitHub. A live version of Mastodon is also running on mastodon.social, and supporting this Patreon will help pay for its hosting.”

What is Mastodon Social and what makes it so special? These are good questions, but in order to answer them – we’ll have to provide a frame of reference.
Mastodon is dead in the water
This is the first attempt I’ve seen at a decentralized alternative to major social networks that feels like a modern, well-designed, user-friendly competitor, actually surpassing the native UI for Twitter in some areas. There are still some bugs, rough edges, and server downtime issues, but overall it cleanly passes the bar for “minimum viable UX”, and this inspires hope for me that open-source alternatives don’t always mean a precipitous drop in user experience quality.
