Zaku is lame on three legs. He 1) tore the skin off his carpal pads, b) tore the bottoms off several of his front nails, and iii) pulled a muscle in his left hind leg.
He has been standing with his front legs held way out in front of him to take the weight off the nails, and has been non weight-bearing on his left hind for most of the day. I poked around and found the muscle he pulled and gave it a little massage. He kept wincing but let me do it. Afterwards he was able to put some weight on the leg, so I'll keep massaging it. He's not ready for stretches; he tenses up.
I'm big mad because I saw exactly when the injury happened-- the hare kept thinking about escaping into the grass and changing its mind, so it ran a circle around Zaku. And Zaku was making very tight turns on gravel. I was about fifty feet away like, oh he is not going to have skin after this.
Then he ran a mile out and a mile back, and continued hunting for hares on the trek back to the car. Then we got home and the adrenaline had worn off and he realized he hurt.
Goddammit.
