Australia has approximately 25.2 million people but because of the size that equates to only approximately 3 people every square kilometer (8 people every sq.mile). Similar population countries are Taiwan with 23.7 million (671 people every square kilometer) and North Korea with 25.6 (213 people every square kilometer). Countries with a similar people per mile are Iceland (3 people every square kilometer) and Canada (4 people every square kilometer). (1) Because it is so spread out, Australia has had to make some adjustments to how they hand local libraries.

Increased use of university libraries, high priority of public libraries supported by local state and government endeavors are only combined with school libraries when the community or local communities are not large enough for individual need. Ensuring all residents have at least one local library of access. Similar to the Netherlands, there are also specialized libraries that focus on art, feminism, Indigenous people, Lesbian and Gay history and legislative history and procedure. What is most telling about the importance, care and thought of those in Australia is the introduction page about how Australian’s public libraries and the Australian Public Library alliance meets” at least 10 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals” that do not focus on just environmental book policies

The Alliance itself is also a note to the goals of the country as it was only formed about ten years ago, July 2009, to work towards creating a national goal and concentration on resident’s free, equal and diverse access to information

I'm sure you've heard about the 17 global goals. Whether it be from a social studies class, online, from friends, etc.

If you haven't heard about the Goals, they were a collection of 17 goals that the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) believes the world should reach by 2030. If you'd like to read more about them all, here's a link:

Part of a project in class was to educate those about a global goal, and I chose global goal #1, 'No Poverty'.

Global Goal 1- No Poverty

"Eradicating poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice and the key to unlocking an enormous human potential. Still, nearly half of the population lives in poverty, and lack of food and clean water is killing thousands every single day of the year. Together, we can feed the hungry, Wipeout disease and give everyone in the world a chance to prosper and live a productive and rich life." - globalgoals.org 'No Poverty'

Goal 1: No Poverty

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Why does this goal matter?

This goal matters because- let me reiterate - 'Nearly half of the population lives in poverty.' That's half of the world going without proper homes, food, and water. As many people who've experienced poverty, or are in poverty have said, "It comes to deciding if we want food on the table or a roof over our heads." Most people assume it's these people's fault that they live in Poverty, when in reality there are so many different factors.

Examples of Poverty:

Some people are born into poverty. There are communities around the world that don't have the same community and economic system as big super powers do.

Some people can fall into poverty, Domestic violence being a big factor to this. (People could be trying to escape an abusive partner and not have a place to go, leaving them with nothing.)

The rising economy is also a big factor. A rising economy means things cost more and that there's a higher demand for things. This leaves some who can't catch up with what's happening.

What you can do

You can find and donate to a charity tied to Global goal 1 that supports those in need.

Donate things you don't use anymore. Do you have old clothes sitting in the back of your closet? Old books collecting dust? Give them to local charities that will distribute them. You could also donate to Goodwill. (Make sure the things you donate are in relatively good condition.)

Help raise government awareness, sign a petition, join protests. It helps gain the government's attention which leads to something being done.
