idk how ridiculous this is but what if the meteor isn't just a meteor, and is actually just an egg containing Pokotho? so when Paul blew it up, what happened was that he just released Pokotho from his confinement and unleashed the evil into the world.

They said it came from outer space. That it was just a big lump of space rock. Whatever it was it rather ironically destroyed the Starlight Theatre.
The residents of Hatchetfield were initially shocked to see their beloved theatre destroyed by space crap, especially as they were so excited for the touring production of Mamma Mia! However, the meteor soon became barely a side thought in the brains of the residents, as one by one they found themselves infected by a musical horror.
"Those things are gonna find us."
"Yeah and you've gotta kill them before they do. You gotta destroy the meteor. You take the head off, the whole thing goes down."
Paul pulled the pin on the grenade and wedged it within the - rock?
His hand, still holding the grenade crashed through a layer of shell and he found himself elbow deep within the swirls of goo inside.
If he had had any thoughts about what that would have meant, he didn't have time to think them as the grenade blew, spraying shell and blue goo everywhere.
"Ma'am, we've searched all around the rubble and the surrounding area. We can't find anything other than a lot of blue goo."
"Very well, let's leave this hellhole."
The PEIP soldiers packed themselves back into their vehicles and left the scene of the explosion. Perhaps just slightly too early. For if they had stayed a few minutes longer, they'd have witnessed the widely spread blue goo begin to move, running towards the crater where the meteor once stood.
The goo built up more and more as the various web like streams converged. When it had all met in the middle, it began to build upwards, taking the form of a giant, blue being.
If the soldiers had stayed those few more minutes, they would have seen the mound of goo become a solid figure, blue fur covering its body, a cracked shell like mask covering its face.
They would have seen it look across the bridge, where half a dozen PEIP vehicles were now on route, and a small smile appear behind the horrifying mask.
