When I was growing up my family didn’t have much. I grew up 15min outside of Detroit with 3 brothers & we all were living in the same small broken home with my mom. I slept in the same room/bed as my brothers until I was 18. When I finally had any money at all my band got a studio room that would be considered the size of a single bedroom with nothing but concrete walls & no windows. I bought a couch & moved into that studio room for a year & worked my ass off. Back at school I wasn’t the jock or the cool kid. I played clarinet. All I did everyday was go home & practice guitar & worked on my voice with my band until our parents got home & made us stop. I didn’t start writing music because it was the cool thing to do. I did it because it was all I had. I wrote songs because I needed to. I didn’t have nice gear or money to buy the next best thing that would make my music sound better. My band played on blown out speakers & hand me down instruments until we got signed. To any young artist who has to start from the bottom during a time when musicians are constantly posting themselves on the top. You don’t have to post a photo on top of a mountain when you’re in the studio working. You don’t have to post a video of you playing in front of a sea of kids when you’re making noise at small club down the street! Take it from someone who came from nothing. It’s all possible! Put in the time & work hard & never be afraid to start over!
