You’re My Best Friend (and my favourite ‘what if’): Noah La’More and Trick Coyote
Let's Talk
'This is my last class.' Trick kept repeating to himself as he followed Noah down the crowded hallway. Sometimes he could handle the crowd of highschoolers moving every which way, trying to get to their own class; but today was not one of those days. Although in reality, Trick only bumped into a few people on his journey to his AP Biology class, every person's presence felt like an enormous pressure on him, squeezing and pressing closer and clouding his vision.
Suddenly, he felt a soft hand on his arm, gently pulling him forward while a light, cheerful laugh followed. "Come on, we're going to be late for class!"
With Noah, he felt a bit braver.
Finally, the inseparable duo reached the doors of their classroom. Noah practically bounded inside, but Trick froze in the doorway. He could hear the echo of his heart racing in his head, he could feel his hands shaking. Some of his classmates, closer to the front of the room, looked up from whatever they were doing. Suddenly, that's all Trick could focus on, the fact that they were watching him.
Noah noticed that Trick didn't follow him in the room and turned back immediately, rushing to Trick's side. "Hey, Trick." He whispered, trying to not draw any more attention to his friend. "It's okay, you can do this." He held his hand out to Trick, smiling softly at him.
Trick glanced at Noah's hand, then into the quiet classroom. "No." He answered quietly, backing out of the doorway. "No, I can't."
Noah followed Trick into the hallway, watching as he shook, grabbing at his arms.
"Hey, Trick, why don't we sit down?"
Trick nodded. "Yeah, okay."
They sat down together on the tiles of the hallway, backs against the cold wall. Noah put his arm around Trick, hand rubbing up and down his back. Trick's breathing was short, choppy. His body was shaking. Noah squeezed him gently. "You have your pills in your bag, right?"
Trick nodded, his arms hugging his knees to his chest.
"You keep them in the front pouch, right?" Noah unzipped Trick's backpack, rustling through the contents of the pouch. He found the small plastic bottle and pulled it out. Trick stared at the little bottle in Noah's hands, glaring at it. Noah frowned, going back to rubbing Trick's back. "They'll help you, Trick. Just breathe and try drinking some water when you take them, okay?" He grabbed the plastic water bottle resting in the pouch on the side of Trick's bag. "Here, try taking some and we'll just sit here and talk, okay?"
"But we have to go to class." Trick said, voice shaking like the rest of his body was.
Noah shook his head. "No we don't. Not when you're not feeling up to it." He offered Trick his pills and water again, and this time Trick gave in, very carefully taking two of the small white tablets out of the bottle. He swallowed them quickly, taking a drink of water while Noah resumed rubbing his back.
Noah noticed how Trick grimaced as he swallowed the water and medicine. "Do you feel sick?"
Trick went to shake his head, but then paused. "I don't think so."
Pulling him closer, Noah hid a soft kiss in Trick's messy hair. "It's gonna be okay. I'm here. I won't go anywhere." He could feel how fast Trick's heart was beating, hear the way his lungs seemed to be gasping for air. "Let's try breathing together, Trick." He suggested. Trick nodded. Noah took in a deep breath, puffing out his chest and cheeks animatedly. The corners of Trick's lips curled in a tiny smile before he inhaled deeply, holding it for a moment, then they exhaled together. They sat there for a few minutes, continuing this, until Trick could feel his heart slowing down. They stayed on the floor, Trick unwilling to try and get up yet.
He could tell his medicine was starting to work, he felt rather drowsy, leaning into Noah more and more. Noah smiled, happy that Trick was starting to feel better. He moved so Trick could lean in more, resting his head on Noah's shoulder. He was so focused on Trick, Noah didn't hear the footsteps getting closer to them.
"Noah? Trick?"
Reuben stood in front of them, looking down with a concerned expression. "Is everything alright? Why aren't you in class?"
Trick shifted, sitting up. "I'm sorry, Uncle," His voice shook a little. "I... I couldn't... My-"
Reuben knelt in front of Trick, smiling softly. "You have no need to be sorry, Trick. Your mental health always comes first, alright?"
Trick nodded. "Right."
"How about we have some hot chocolate in my office?" ((Reuben for best principal ever. Noah for best friend ever.))

"Sometimes you meet people and they strike you in some way--the way they laugh or move or smile-- and that's great. And then sometimes you meet people who seem to walk on stardust--they have a way to make everything seem a little better, a little brighter... it's like... they shine brighter than the sun."
That Time Noah Gave Trick A Lamp
"Noah! There's someone here to see you!" Maria's voice called out from around the corner. "She's here!" Noah gasped, gripping Trick's shoulders tighter. "Hailey's here and she's going to make me visit her parents!" Trick opened his mouth to say something in an attempt to calm his friend, but was cut off when Noah spun away from him, glancing frantically up and down the hallway before grabbing a lamp off of a small table nearby and shoving it into Trick's hands for no apparent reason. Trick blinked, a confused expression on his face. "What the hell am I supposed to do with THIS?"
Butterflying. The act of flying like a butterfly. Also known as Noah's main source of transportation.
