”Mike would’ve explored” respectfully Noah what the fuck
hayate grabs him by the elbow, squeezing tightly, and though his expression remains neutral, his eyes are distant. "do you feel that?"
It’s in the stillness of the air.
He thinks that’s the strangest part-- the moon has hung swollen above their heads for days and it’s finally starting to wane, and in the bright light of it the canopies of the trees don’t rustle at all. Kakashi has lived his entire too-long and bloody life in Konoha, all thirty years of it, and he’s never seen the leaves on the great redwoods outside the gates this still. It sends a chill down his spine.
Animals are acting strangely too: his pack has been alternating between restless and short tempered and disconcertingly lethargic. Birds flying too low, fleeing unseasonably early. No prey in the woods, not even big fat squirrels that like to taunt his dogs and drop nuts on their heads. No deer, no rabbit.
The people around him haven’t seemed to notice. He’d thought maybe the unease constantly creeping up his spine and churning in his gut had only been paranoia, something else to put a lid on and scoff at himself over, something else to chalk up to the way he can never quite force himself to stop jumping at shadows-- after all, no one else had noticed.
No one else had noticed the moon had been full for three days in a row.
Except, apparently, Gekko Hayate. The younger man almost startles him with the suddenness of his appearance and the urgency with which he grabs his arm-- he’d certainly startled Yamato, who nearly falls from the railing he’d been perched on for an hour while Kakashi had watched the moon linger heavily over the mountain in the background. Kakashi hardly even flinches, just turning his head so he can peer at Hayate from the corner of his eye, silent like the grave even as Yamato rights himself with something like chagrin creeping into his expression.
Do you feel that Hayate asks him, and Kakashi tips his chin a little and thinks maybe he isn’t totally crazy after all. Turning his eyes back on the moon, he thinks he finally recognizes just what it is about it that’s been throwing him off. It looks like a dead thing-- it looks the way a corpse’s eyes do before they’re closed. There’s no life to it, and maybe that’s a crazy thing to think and feel about a massive chunk of rock sitting in space but when he turns his gaze back out over the trees and he sees how utterly still the leaves are and he thinks about how strange things have been, it makes sense.
“Something’s wrong,” he finally agrees, his voice hardly above a murmur despite the deep silence that had settled over the village that night. Beneath the mask, he bites at his lip as he considers: now that he knows he isn’t crazy, there has to be something to be done. The moon has hung in the sky for three days like a bloated corpse, and there has to be something that can be done. “Hayate, do you know anything?”
@moonsdying /// They'll be singing out loud when the water goes through the crowd. they'll be howling for you when the waves come crashing through.
anyway 22, 25, 27!!
name a song that reminds you of one of your best memories: okay, so there's actually a tie between two songs for this! one is when I found out I was cancer free, the first song that played on the radio on the way back home was break free by queen so now if it ever plays I think about that. second is rollercoaster by bleachers bc when I went to shadow of the city, I was right in front during their performance and got a hi five from Jack during that song. was pretty cool!
name a song that makes you think about someone you love: oooh, fuck yes. when any song from Marina's family jewels album comes on I immediately think about my friend Mae. they're one if my oldest friends and I really got into Marina's music when I first met them in middle school!
name a song that you wish was longer: stardust by Mika, but specifically the version he released with Chiara. that song could be 20 minutes long and I'd still listen to it on repeat. same with 91 by bleachers. the instrumentals in both make my brain feel good and I want more of it
