Rules: in a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard—they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just ones that have touched you. Tag 10 friends.
The Hourglass Door by Lisa Mangum This book is honestly one of my favorites–I read it in 8th grade at the recommendation of my friend Whitney, and I can honestly say I just love it. It's really really a beautiful book that made me think about the way I live my life and strive to keep it more interesting. I've probably reread this book like 10 times to be honest.
The Forgotten Locket by Lisa Mangum This one is the final book in the Hourglass Door trilogy and holy shit it's a beauty. I didn't include book 2 despite the fact that it's just as amazing because I love it for the same reasons I love books 1 and 3. It has to be one of the most poetic books I've read, and honestly the ending makes me cry every time. It's so beautiful. This series reflects the beauty of time and life and the importance of cherishing your life and doing what matters to you and not anyone else.
After Hello by Lisa Mangum Seriously love Lisa obviously. Her books are just beautiful. It's not like they're anything spectacular or the plot is so exciting, it's just real, interesting, and yet different. I want to go on an adventure trading things from a sugar packet to my dreams! This book makes me want to just go for it.
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Christ, John Green writes beautifully. He makes you think and question your whole existence. I believe it's impossible to read a John Green book without being changed and also sobbing. This book makes you appreciate the pain and appreciate each moment and really think about what scars you leave.
Looking For Alaska by John Green I can honestly say I loved this book even more than TFIOS. Alaska was just such an interesting character, and I could relate to her so well. She didn't give a fuck, plain and simple, and yet in the end she gave way too many. I admire the way she has that "I don't care" attitude and sass, is who she wants to be, and can pull some great pranks, and yet she was one of the most compassionate people. I want to understand things like Alaska, I want to care like Alaska, I want to be strong like Alaska, but I also want to feel just as deep as Alaska.
Insurgent by Veronica Roth Tris was straight up terrible for most of this book, but I loved how she realized it in the end, and I also loved how she kept her character through it all. Sometimes we need to step back to make the best decision, because emotions and even morals can get in the way. I also love how this book can be good and moral and beautifully written all at once. I admire Veronica Roth both as an author and as a Christian. I won't whine about the last book now but I would like to say I understand the purpose for the ending of Allegiant but I think it was a bad decision to end it like that.
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare I am Clary and Clary is me. But really, I love this book because I am sooooo Clary. I want to be brave like Clary, I want to find my own path like Clary, I want to fuck shit up till I get it right like Clary, and I also want a friend like Simon and a man like Jace. Not blond and super muscly–even though that is hot it's not my favorite–but someone who will treat me special, who will always want the best for me. Someone hilarious that I can slap in the arm for being an egotistical sarcastic asshole but will also be sweet to me and hold me when I'm sad.
City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare Jace crying is my weakness to be honest. Crying Jace is what I want in life. I love it when guys show me their feelings and will let me know they're sad. I would love taking a guy in my arms and letting him be my little spoon and he could cry into my chest–sorry I'm rambling! But Jace is very real with Clary in this book and it just melts me. And Clary is so strong. She will do whatever it takes, she can go through hell, but she will come out on top even if she has to drag Jace with her.
City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare Jace and Clary are so close in this book. They understand each other completely and they function like one person. It's so beautiful I just want to cry. AND you really see a lot of character development throughout this series and it's very well pronounced in this book. It has the best ending I could possibly think of, and each character is made beautiful. No one dies without you thinking of their story. This series has just changed me, I can't even describe it. It makes you put yourself in everyone's shoes, it makes you understand the evil in the world, and it makes you realize nothing is really impossible.
Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl This has to be one of the greatest books of my existence. Lena is so different, and so is Ethan but he's much better at hiding it. Ethan Lawson Wate is the sweetest motherfucker ever and no one can convince me otherwise. This book and series is all about facing your fears, embracing who you are and working it. The world of Beautiful Creatures is a brilliant one, and the characters are so real. And even in the midst of all the supernatural, we're reminded the beauty of humanity.
