1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?
It depends! When i start a new wip i get about 600ish words in and then start changing the font until I find one that feels right. Most of the time I land on Merriweather 🙂↕️
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
I have an extremely common origin story. The first thing that got me to put pen to paper was straight rewriting whatever I had read that week bc 3rd grade me thought all the characters should be girls obviously (in some very specific ways I have not changed).
25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?
Oooh. Okay. Eudokia (Eirene's daughter, the kid, NOT main Eudokia) is a big dogs-over-people person but only for employed working dogs! She's repelled by all others.
3. What was the first thing you decided on, the character's name, appearance, personality or their role in the story?
Eudokia sprang forth fully formed from my head. It's her novel. I just write the thing.
Valent is built around being the plot instigator; Eudokia's story starts when she is enlisted to undo Valent's work.
11. Is there any existing character from other media that your character resembles? Was the resemblance intentional or was it a coincidence?
Valent not so much! She very much comes out of being a character I want to read but have been unable to find. Eudokia mostly falls into that same camp but. sigh. this is about to be a deep cut into my psyche. Eudokia's first act look and demeanor is heavily influenced by Szabó Szilveszter's Tybalt.
5. How did you choose their name and why? Was it simply based on vibes or is there any specific meaning behind the name? Are the reasons behind their name different in- and out of universe?
I think a normal amount about naming characters.
Had to break this down a bit.
First and foremost there is an in-universe aristocratic tendency towards taking names from an antiquity that they find glamorous; though the setting is a secondary world, I represent this by giving many characters ancient Greek forenames with their surname origin varying by region/family background. Valent is one of the few characters to avoid this, as the pretense inherent to that naming convention ill-suited her. The in-universe rationale is that they named her after a direct ancestor on her father's side...which is to say that while her name comes from her family's actual history it is also, in the present, the odd name out (this suits her) - the other members of her immediate family are named Kallias, Meliton, and Ariston.
Eudokia was on the bottom of the shortlist; I originally wanted to name her Eugenia and had Euphrasia as the runner-up. Then I sent a brief personality/plot summary to a friend and he voted Eudokia by way of linking Eudokia Makrembolitissa's wikipedia page. Which. Fair enough. "Eudokia" and not "Eudocia" because I wanted to be clear on the hard-C pronunciation (I got my third choice of protagonist name but I'm putting my foot down about this one). Her full name is Eudokia Vass, which is a bit like meeting a white American woman named Emily Smith. It's generic and, aside from being feminine, it reads as being from social majorities. Both the ordinariness and implied social standing of her full name were deliberate choices on Eudokia's part. "Vass" was a surname I had jotted down on a list and picked for her because it was short and easy to append. I wanted her names and variations thereof to pop up in the background, so there's a lot of place names that start with "Vass-" or "Vas-". Also, it lets her match Valent a little...but only with the name she's going to cast off.
Valent's surnames. Okay. Currently, her full name is Valent Kardos and, admittedly, I do not remember where I got Kardos from. I've had it hanging around for years waiting for a good character to use it on...which turned out to be two characters because I ended up needing a surname that went with both Valent and Cyril. In-universe, Kardos is the name of both Valent's maternal grandfather and a province...which results in some fun politicized nameplay between Valent Kardos and Cyril of Kardos (he's allegedly not a Kardos but he is indisputably from Kardos and does not otherwise have a surname...in this way shortening "Cyril of Kardos" to "Cyril Kardos" or "Cyril Cardos" becomes a shibboleth).
All that said, she would have been born Valent Faure (a name she inherited from her father) but there's been a disowning spiral that she started and then got hit by. Eudokia's married name is going to be Eudokia Faure. Like Vass, Faure was also on a potential surname list and it won because it was the name on there that I felt least suited Eudokia...so every member of that family only has the name Faure because of her.
