The Bragg-Paul Pulsator. The pulsator was invented by Sir William Bragg in 1933 to help a friend who was experiencing muscle paralysis. Robert William Paul (an English scientific instrument maker) designed the instrument. The apparatus was used for 3 years by Bragg's friend. . The goal with the apparatus was to give artificial respiration to patients who could not breathe for themselves. By placing a air bag around the patient’s chest and abdomen the apparatus helped the patient to breathe. With an electric pump the air bag was rhythmically inflated and deflated which allowed the chest muscles to move and the patient could breathe. . Can you guess what this is? . In 1896, Henri Becquerel discovered that certain elements released radiation spontaneously and with that, radiation had been discovered. Husband and wife Pierre and Marie Curie came to devote their scientific careers to the study of this phenomenon. . The simple device they constructed in 1898 and dubbed an "ionization chamber" became an instrument for measuring radioactivity. The two metal plates in the chamber function as a condenser in an electric circuit. When a radioactive sample is placed on one of the plates, the radiation causes the air between the plates to ionize. This causes an electric current to flow through the ionization chamber and the intensity of this current becomes a measure of the sample's radioactivity. Among other things, their study of radioactivity led to the discovery of the elements radium and polonium. Though Pierre Curie died in an accident in 1906, this did not halt Marie's research. . Marie continued with her research and was awarded her second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time in Chemistry. Pierre and Marie shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. . Photo: @nobelprizemuseum . . Take a look at Alfred Nobel's notebook - did you know that the founder of the Nobel Prize was a chemist, inventor, engineer and entrepreneur? During his life, he acquired 355 patents worldwide. He invented dynamite and experimented in making synthetic rubber, leather and artificial silk among many other things. . Credits: @nobelprize_org . . Can you guess what this is? It is a model of the first electric car built in the world - designed at University of Groningen in 1835. Chemistry Laureate Bernard Feringa who studied at the University of Groningen and now is a professor there, donated this model to the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. .
