About to reach city limits.. I can almost see the forest but it's still a little ways away. Not gonna put my coat on yet 'cause it's a pretty nice day. It's a good thing I brought my skates because this breeze has been just lovely!
I.. I paid a visit to Mom before I left. Her condition only continues to get worse and worse. It's good that I'm leaving now, because I don't think I could handle seeing her like that anymore. I haven't been so easily brought to tears like that before.. I just hope this can all get fixed somehow..
About to set out for the forest. I'm hoping my trip to Entre won't take too long, but I've never been out there before and I may get lost. Especially if this virus in town is related to his factory.. I really don't know what to expect anymore. Mom's been sent to the hospital along with many others. I can't just sit around reading books any longer..
Bringing my skates with me to use until I get to the dirt path outside of town. Hopefully that'll help speed things up a little.
What else, what else.. Water? Got it.. Flashlight! Oh, definitely my journal so I can share my notes with Entre and maybe we can figure out what to do about all this [if he's not too dense to believe he's failed, that is]. Hm.. I found some canned vegetables under the bed. Guess I could whip those out if I get reeally hungry. I'll bring some extra masks, too.. And maybe some extra clothes and my coat. I don't know how intense it's going to be out there and as far as I know, the factory's set pretty deep into the forest.
Gotta be prepared for anything.
Mr. Entre's factory production of the colored thneeds has been halted, says the local newspaper. I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier, but something tells me all of this--mother's flu, the sudden thneed colors--is linked together.
My research tells me that unlike animals such as mules and hinnies, plants can't handle being genetically altered or mutated safely. The chromosomes are almost entirely difficult to match up, which is why such animals aren't able to reproduce. In plants however, this serves as a bigger problem. Their structure is so fragile from their cells to the way mitosis is carried out that, when altered, will react in a chemical obstruction.
Apparently there have been scientists and organized labs that tried to emulate what I believe Entre has done, but the experiments were done on a far smaller and, -ahem-, professional scale and were able to be contained before the mutations progressed into a dangerous state.
Results have varied from growth mutations during mitosis, highly pollutant gases to even poisonous fruit. I don't know exactly what happened with these new Truffula trees, but I think it's about time I found out.
Still can't put my finger on this virus. I've gotten so much information, but it all just seems like a really bad flu virus. Doctors are telling me to leave it at that, but seriously?? Half the town catches what seems to be the SAME virus, and you want me to totally disregard it? Unacceptable.
Maybe I've just been looking for answers in the wrong places.
This is the most difficult endeavor I've ever put myself through. I've spent every ounce of my free time experimenting.. I tried dyeing some ordinary, original colored, store-bought thneeds [the cashier gave me a look.. I had to clarify it was for experimentation only. I guess my reputation precedes me] into the colors that I saw in the store the other day. I tried every method with the fabric dye for all different types of fabrics--fur, cotton.. heck, even leather!
In the end, all of the techniques failed miserably. The thneed would lose its delightful smell, the colors wouldn't mix right, and sometimes the thneed even came out as hard as a rock. Can you believe that there were even MORE problems than these? After all this, I'm just so tired.. But my curiosity keeps me driven. Hopefully all the notes I've taken in my journal will make more sense in the morning.
For now though, I need to take a break and go take care of my mom. She's been having a strange flu coupled with a stomach illness that the doctors haven't been able to classify at all. What great timing, right? As if I didn't have enough racing through my head.. Guess I'll have to do some research on that also.
On the way home from my usual library visit, I noticed something.. different in the local store window. New thneed colors..? From my research, I’ve learned that thneeds are made from the precious tufts of Truffula trees.. and those have only been known to grow warmer colored tufts—the colors we’ve previously known to be the only colors thneeds come in.
So where did these new colors come from? Could it be they’ve discovered a whole new Truffula forest?! But then why would they need to charge an extra two dollars.. I’ve gotta head back to the library later today and do some more research!
