Guys, I made it into the sizzle reel twice (plus once with my acceptance speech, but let’s not talk about that one!)
Speaking of No Bull, you guys should go follow @thatnobullguy because he’s one of the spokespeople (part of The No Bull Guys).
#Ugly
Words are very mincing things, they serve as our primary source of communication and expression. As we grow older and our opinions start to form words can become weapons, we witness the hurt they can cause to ourselves and others.
You’d hear stories about how children battle with words, establishing dominance and superiority over others with adjectives and verbs. Yet I experienced most of this warfare within my own home, running for cover to avoid harsh and demeaning comments.
Being who I am and understanding the nature of time, I tend to let these attacks grow old in my memory. Laying dormant in my person lies someone who has learned to despise themselves based on the commentary of one person.
I didn’t have a group of bullies, rather one that I shared a room with, one that I could not escape. Not that I was perfect myself in behavior, but I know for a fact that I kept to myself. Furthermore my own inner creativity acted as a padding, although not respected or encouraged in any way.
“Ugly” was my word, and for years it branded me, used casually in full view of others with no opposition. It served as a nickname, and no matter how much I tried to ignore it the title still stuck. Even to this day I associate myself with nothing other than that word.
It has ruined me, reducing my self worth to nothing other than function and profitability. Appearance should not correlate with worth, yet “ugly” was not an association I was happy to have. At this stage in my life I see myself as nothing more than a cluster of dry blackened sticks, once full of fire and life and now left idle and no longer useful.
This is how I felt, at one point I was content with my appearance, but with time that word began to settle itself within my bones as the undeniable truth. I was once free and ignorant to this truth, beaming with happiness and confidence. Yet now, after I have grown numb to words, that one word, the first word, the first negative association of myself refuses to leave.
I began to scrutinize myself, my buck teeth, the gap in between them, my large forehead my dark skin riddled with acne scars. My gangly, skeletal form, with dark knees and elbows and hair that never seemed to look good on any day. I was a mess, just a collaboration of spare parts put together to form one giant disaster.
It is too late for me to regain what I’ve lost, but I will not stand idly by while it happens to others. It is not fair to rob others of joy even if it makes you feel better or you apologize for it later. To take your aggression out on another and believe that it is justified is a ridiculous notion. Remember that it may not show on the surface but these words have a deadly side effect.
What is the word that made you feel lesser, share it as well as your experience and tag it with #nobullnation and #onewordcanhurt
The film below features the downward spiral that one word can cause, that word being “loser”
You can also share this word (loser) as well as a picture of yourself with the word or a post with screen shots of the film and remember to use both hashtags
