hello, hella! firstly i love your gifs and you are such an inspiration to me! secondly i loved this gifset /post/742077141260402689/hellas-valentines-day-countdown-mulder-x and i was wondering how did you manage to keep the colors "apart"? i don't know if i'm making much sense, but every time i blend two gifs and try to add a colorful gradient map on one of them, both gifs end up having the same color.
oh my god thank you!! that is so sweet <3
i think i understand what you're asking and the short answer is blending modes and putting colour over black space but i'll give the long answer under the cut!!
I'm going to assume that since you're blending gifs, you know how to blend using blending modes.
For the second gif of the x files gifset, I had these two gifs: the forehead touch gif and the forehead kiss gif. In a first draft of the gif, the forehead touch gif had a b&w gradient map and the forehead kiss had a blue & black gradient map like this.
As you can see, the forehead touch gif has a lot of dark space. When using the screen blending mode in gif blending, any part of the dark space on the base gif get "filled in" with the top layer that is set to screen.
So when I set the blending mode of the forehead kiss gif to screen, it fills in the dark parts of the forehead touch gif. And because there is so much dark space and the top layer is entirely blue, the whole gif basically turns blue. The only parts that stay gray are Mulder's shirt and the light in the background which were light to begin with.
But, like you, I didn't want the entire gif to be blue so I swapped the gradient maps. Now, the forehead kiss has a b&w gradient map on it and the forehead touch has a blue and black gradient map on it.
As you can see on the forehead touch gif, there is a high level of contrast so that any dark part of the gif is black (or nearly black) but not blue even with the gradient map applied.
That means that when I set the blending mode of the forehead kiss gif to screen, the forehead kiss gif fills in the dark part without actually becoming blue to give me this effect. This is because there is no colour to those dark areas that get's applied to the forehead kiss gif.
i hope that makes sense and answered your question!!
my general advice for blending is to have at least one gif with really well defined black/very dak areas because it creates such a cool effect with the screen blending modes!!
hello, jagoda! i hope you are doing well! do you mind sharing the noise/light effect you used in the third and fifth gifs in this set? i really admire all your gifs and tutorials, thanks for the hard work, you are incredible! (post/724382154002481152/i-didnt-get-a-chance-to-say-what-i-was-going-to)
hi angel, thank you so much for all your kind words, it's always nice to feel so appreciated 💛 unfortunately, i don't remember exactly which effect i used for these gifs, as i made them over half a year ago. but whenever i'm looking for film effects, i just type different variations of film leak/noise/transition effect into my youtube search and pick one from there! i think finding this exact one shouldn't take you too much time 😌
you are a wonderful source of joy! may your special day bring you an extra share of everything which makes you the happiest in the world. happy birthday anna! ♥
here it is, and odg, idek what this is. YOU HAVE WEIRD IDEAS THEFI
600~ words or so, i guess this is pg13?
Kris sees him at midnight. He is sitting by himself, dark hair hidden under a beanie, and half of his face covered by a fluffy gray scarf. The freezing march waters make his fingers go numb, but he keeps on playing with the waves. It is damn cold, but it still feels warmer than home, so he lingers there, just watching the horizon disappear in the darkness, ocean and sky being one. It makes his heart ache a little, even though he doesn’t know why. The wind blows against his cheek, painting it with flushes of red, but Kris stays there enjoying the silence of the waves. Until he hears a faint voice in the wind.
It’s low and distant at first. It sings in a way it makes Kris heart beat faster and faster until he is up on his feet, eyes scanning the dark sea. He sees nothing, and yet he hears the most beautiful voice he had ever heard, and his legs start to move almost unwillingly, like he doesn’t even have a mind of his own anymore. He climbs the rocks, trying to follow the direction of the voice. His heart is throbbing in such a speed that his breath falters him, and he needs to stop. The voice is so close now, and he closes his eyes so he can hear it better. It’s beautiful and yet broken, and when Kris finally opens his eyes he sees it’s source. A pale man with dark eyes and brown wet hair glued against his forehead looks at him from the water, and Kris ’ breath get stuck inside his lungs. He is not singing anymore, but Kris knows it’s him. He looks at him with wide eyes, and his wet skin sparkles under the moonlight in a way that makes Kris’ insides twist and turn because he can’t actually remember ever seeing something so stunning.
“Who are you?” Kris asks, voice weak because for some reason, it seems like the boy is glowing and he doesn’t even get weirded out by that. It fascinates him, really. The way the boy mixes with the water like it’s a part of him - and not even for a moment he asks himself if maybe that isn’t a bad sign. The boy doesn’t reply though. He simply places his hand on the rock by Kris’ feet, and Kris can’t help but notice how lean and thin his fingers look. And when the boy uses the rock as support, Kris’ heart skips a beat as he watches he slowly getting closer. The boy’s lips are red and plushy, and when he opens his mouth again, he sings. He sings and Kris gasps, because it’s like his voice taints him, and pulls him into some kind of black hole that he doesn’t feel like getting out of. And Kris feels himself leaning in, getting closer because he needs more. Because he needs all of it. Like all of his senses are blinded and the only thing his brain tells him is that he needs that boy not to stop singing. And then the boy is so close that he is singing in his ear and he can feel his lips against his skin, and they are as cold as the water, but instead of making him shiver, it makes his skin burn.
And it’s like reason had failed him, and there is nothing in his mind warning him against the cold hands on his shoulder, caressing his arms. He doesn’t even notice the way the boy’s eyes glimpse as he slowly tugs him together with him. All he can hear and feel is his voice, it’s the way his plump lips move. It feels like beauty had poisoned his senses. And even though the water is cold when the boy finally drags him in the ocean, Kris doesn’t even feel it piercing his skin like a thousand knives - or even the fierce pain on his neck as teeth slits his throat open.
